Nancy Elizabeth Simpson Obituary
Nancy Simpson of Kingston, Ontario passed away peacefully on March 25, 2025, after a short stay at Kingston General Hospital. Nancy was born and raised in Toronto and received her PhD in Genetics from the University of Toronto. In 1965 she moved to Kingston to accept a position at Queen’s University to do genetics research and teach. Nancy’s published and pioneering research contributed significantly to advances in the chromosomal localization and cloning of a number of inherited conditions. She was recognized internationally in the field of human gene mapping and was a founding-member of the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists. Nancy was also a steadfast mentor to her students and junior colleagues. She proudly owned a sailboat for many years and was one of the first female members of the Kingston Yacht Club. She traveled extensively during her life for both work and pleasure, and she was an avid skier into her seventies.
Predeceased by her parents William and Jessie (Knowles) Simpson, her brother Gordon and her niece Daphne, she is survived by her niece Nora Learoyd and great-nephews Richard Smith, Cameron Smith, and Daniel Smith, all of Calgary. Cremation has been entrusted to James Reid Funeral Home, Cremation and Reception Centre, 1900 John Counter Blvd, Kingston, Ontario.
