Moss, Michael John “Mike”
Passed peacefully at home, in his 81st year after a brief illness. Survived by his daughter Sandy (Jim) and former wife Linda, sister Gina Raymond (John), his niece Sandra and nephews Chris, Jason and Justin. Predeceased by his parents Maurice and Francis, and his brother Roger.
Mike was born in Calne, England and immigrated in 1948 to Canada with his family. He grew up on a farm in Mount Hope, which fostered his love of nature, animals and gardening, that lasted a lifetime. In his early careers Mike worked for CIBC and McNally Construction before attending police college in 1968. He joined the Hamilton Wentworth Police Department where he served the community for 30 years. Mike enjoyed patrolling Dundas and the surrounding areas and preferred to help people by talking to them verses issuing tickets. His badge number was 12, his shoe size was 12, and in one performance review it was the number of tickets he gave out that year.
Mike was a lifetime O Negative blood donor of more than 150 donations. Not one to sit still, Mike filled his off days driving for Airways Transit which fostered his love of 3 things, geography, travel and driving. He loved stories from people about places he had yet to see. Mike retired to Southampton where he continued to drive for Grey Bruce Airbus, tend to his or anyone’s garden or polish his lawnmower. Mike took many vacations, both by car and plane. He enjoyed sunny destinations like Barbados, St. Lucia, Tortola and other Caribbean Islands. He drove coast to coast in Canada and the USA enjoying the splendors that both countries offer. A trip to Ireland came calling and he enjoyed 2 weeks driving around the country with Murph that produced his favourite brew. Costco was also a favourite driving destination with a stop for a stroll through Ikea to foster his love of organization.
Wherever Mike went he would always find a bar stool with his name on it. Playing tennis and badminton years earlier, Mike was a recreational golfer and enjoyed watching almost any sporting event on TV. Mike had a ready laugh and enjoyed many bonfires in Southampton and Picton with friends. Mike’s door was always open, as his circle of friends both old and new would attest. Mike loved a project and would always lend a helping hand. He enjoyed building decks, wallpapering and pouring concrete in his younger days. That shed pad isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. To this day it remains pristine, crack free and 10 inches thick.
Thank you to all those who supported Mike in his final days and tolerated his questionable wardROBE choice, even during his Saturday afternoon beers with Ted, Murph and Russ.
