Michael Taylor Obituary
Michael Steward Taylor passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was 83 years old. Born in Coventry, England, Mike attended Henry VIII School before completing his education at Lanchester Polytechnic, now Coventry University. He then became an engineering apprentice with GEC Engineering, which led to a distinguished career as a microwave engineer specializing in satellite communications. In 1963, he married his first wife, Janice Taylor (née Herron), and together they began their family. In 1968, at the age of 28, Collins Radio recruited him from England, and he moved his family across the Atlantic to Canada. His work later took them back to England in 1974, then to Scotland in 1977, before they ultimately decided that Canada was home, returning in 1979. The family settled in Brooklin, Ontario, where they spent many happy years.
After Janice’s passing in 2008, Mike found love again with Sharon (Shari) Taylor (née Smith). They married in Cobourg in 2010 and blended their families, affectionately dubbing themselves the “Taylor Bunch.” Over their 15 wonderful years together, Mike and Shari lived in many places throughout Ontario and even spent time in Prince Edward Island—Mike always loved exploring new places. A pioneer in the field of satellite communications, Mike was a founding owner, Senior Vice President and Chief Engineer of Novanet Communications Ltd., a company his son-in-law Stewart continues to help run today. Novanet was a key innovator in satellite communications in Canada. He retired at the age of 64, concluding a long and impactful career in the industry. If asked what defined him as a man, Mike would have said it was his faith. His relationship with God was the cornerstone of his life. He was deeply involved in prayer ministry for many years, first with Janice and later with Shari. He felt incredibly blessed to have been saved by grace and to know the depth of God’s love. In Carleton Place, he and Shari were part of the Ottawa Valley Community Church family.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Shari Taylor; his daughters Sarah (Devin) Hunt, Claire (Stewart) Sheriff, Andrea (Scot) Kinsey; and his step-sons Mark (Michelle) Taylor, James (Megan) Taylor, and Jon Taylor. He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren: Mark (Kylee), Rebecca, Matthew (Shai), and Rachel (Prateek) Hunt; Gillian and Callum Sheriff; Emily (Josh) and Ashley Kinsey; and Jocelyn, Braeden, Carlyn, Julia, Georgia-Lynn, and Memphis Taylor. He is also fondly remembered by his sister-in-law Rae Taylor, as well as many cherished friends and family members on both sides of the ocean. Mike was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Alice Taylor (née Jelley); his brother, Anthony Taylor; his sister-in-law, Marcia Taylor; and his first wife, Janice.
A funeral service celebrating Mike’s life will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Calvary Pentecostal Church (7196 County Road 29, Carleton Place) at 2:00 p.m., followed by a reception in the church hall. A private family burial will take place on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at St. Paul’s Columbus Cemetery (3325 Thornton Road North, Oshawa) at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation or Compassion, an international ministry holistic care in Jesus’ name, providing life- changing interventions and hope to children living in poverty. Link at www.compassion.ca
