Michael John Laverty Obituary
Michael John Laverty – Born November 10,1941 (Montreal). Deceased February 10, 2025 (Renfrew)
Peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday February 10, 2025 at Bonnechere Manor, Renfrew. Michael is survived by his wife Margaret (Peggy) Laverty (nee Monaghan) of 58 years. He will be greatly missed by his son Brian Laverty (Catherine Arthurs), daughter Sandra Laverty (Chris Edwards), daughter Suzanne Laverty (Stuart McCubbin); brother Patrick Laverty (Gail Taylor), sister Barbara Gauthier (late J.P. Gauthier) and sister in law Elizabeth Black. Predeceased by mother Elisabeth (Betty) nee Brookfield and father Arthur Edward Laverty; stepfather E. Grant Baker; sister Susan Laverty and brother Phil Baker. Mike will be fondly remembered by his mother in law Marguerite and the Monaghan family.
Mike attended Loyola College and St. Joseph Teachers College (Montreal). He spent nearly half of his 32-year career in education as the longest-serving principal at St. Joseph’s High School (Renfrew) and was inducted into the St. Joseph’s wall of honour in 1999. During his tenure (1982—1997), he saw St. Joseph’s High School evolve from a very modest facility to a modern, computerized, state-of-the-art institution with more than double the student population. His involvement and leadership in professional associations, the parish, and the community are well known. They include chairperson, secretary and chief negotiator for the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association; eastern region president, provincial director and secondary councillor of the Catholic Principals’ Council of Ontario; and editor of Shoptalk, Livewires and Principal Connections education newsletters.
He served as both secretary and president of the Renfrew Rotary Club, and was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow — the highest form of recognition a Rotary Club can bestow upon a member for outstanding contribution to the community. Michael was a former tennis pro in Westmount (Montreal), an avid hiker, camper and gardener. He loved bridge, cribbage and billiards and he was an avid fan of the Montreal Canadians, Montreal Expos, Montreal Alouettes, New York Giants and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
A Celebration of Michael’s life will be held at a date and time to be announced. Donations in his memory may be made to the Renfrew and District Food Bank, Valley Animal Rescue, Renfrew County Animal Centre SPCA or Riverview Rescues.
