It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce
the passing of our patriarch, Mervyn Horace (Merv) Simpson on Tuesday,
February 4th, 2025 at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home in
Antigonish. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his
family in thought. At 93 years young, Dad was still smiling
and telling his stories. Now he is
settled.
Merv was born in born in Montreal, Quebec, to the late
Horace and Elsie Simpson on November 14th, 1931. Merv was predeceased
by his loving wife, Christine of 66 years. Leaving to mourn
are his children, Rick (Marilyn), Steve (Ann), and Mike (Karen); his
grandchildren, Matthew, Victoria, and Izak; step-grandchild, John;
great grandchildren, Aislyn and Madilyn; and, of course, his beloved
dog, Charlie. His other relatives and friends will also
mourn his passing.
He is further predeceased by his three brothers, Earl,
Ross, and Allen; and his sister, Ruth.
Merv, our father, grandfather, great grandfather, and
our best friend, worked hard his entire life. Most of his
schooling was on the job training. He loved to learn and
always had a book, magazine or manual to help him to better understand
what he was aiming to do. He was simply a student of life
and quite good at it. As a young man living in Quebec and
Two Mountains, Merv worked for Dominion Biologique, Shade
Tree (Aborist), and as a foreman for snow removal outside of Montreal.
He was also an entrepreneur, running a gas and service station and
working as a mechanic, and he had many years working various jobs for
Dupont Canada.
In 1976, Merv and Christine bought a farm from his
mother in Boylston, Guysborough Co., NS. They sold their
home in Quebec and quit their careers to become hobby farmers and live
a simpler life with lots of room to grow, especially for their
children. Merv quickly started renovating the century old
farmhouse, barn, and fencing and bought many farm animals.
His ability to do anything was obvious after he built new chimneys,
and tackled electrical, plumbing, gardening, and many carpentry
endeavours – not to mention fixing anything mechanical. He
was in his glory, especially when his three best friends (his sons)
were around and giving him a hand. Like many folk of his
time, our Dad was always busy doing this job and that task.
He continued to find work in Guysborough working in carpentry and at
the fish plant in Canso.
Merv was a kind and gentle soul. He was
always smiling and looked forward to each and every day. Dad
loved music and stereos. The Simpson Clan had many parties at the old
farm, and to keep the young folk from driving the roads, had many all
nighters playing guitar, the spoons and singing, not to mention Dads
expensive stereo playing all the classic rock and roll hits. Lots of
food and lots of smiles and laughter. Our Dad always stayed
up with the youngins’.
Merv and Chris also had a love to travel the country
and when they retired, they sold their home in Porters Lake and
purchased a big diesel truck and fifth wheel, so they could travel
North America for several years. Merv and his beloved wife,
Chris, can now be together again as travelling gypsies into the next
journey and adventure together. The Grand Canyon of their next
life.
The Simpson Clan will have a private Celebration of
Life, and the burial will be in Boylston United Church
Cemetery.
A very special thank you to Dr. Gallant and all the
wonderful nurses and CCA’s at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing
Home, who have been such an important part of our fathers care both
physically, intellectually, and emotionally. There are too many true
professionals who went over and beyond the call of your chosen careers
to care for our Dad, Merv! As our Dad would say, « We do the Best
We can! ». Thank you!
