Obituary of Melbourne Louis Johnston
Melbourne Louis Johnston
July 23, 1936 – February 23, 2025
Died peacefully at Shannex – Tucker Hall. He was the son of Bernard M. And Gladys F. Johnston and a lifelong Saint Johner. He spent his early years in the Redhead, South and North ends. In grade 9, he met the love of his life Donna at Princess Elizabeth School. They graduated from Saint John High together in 1955 and married in 1958.
Mel was a natural athlete. He played midget baseball and had opportunity to play hockey on a U.S. college scholarship, but he went to work at the American Clothing Company and Bank of Canada. He began his career with CHSJ television as a camera operator in 1962. His interest in television and media began with a gift of a Brownie movie camera from his father in high school. He had a keen interest in electronics, building his own TV from a kit in the late 50’s. Mel liked his music, and he also built is own home speakers. His home audio system was known in the neighbourhood.
Mel retired as the operations and production manager at CHSJ/MITV in 1994 after a 32-year career that began when television was relatively new. His experience and contributions to the production of local content was extensive and varied from shows like Miss Anne, Time for Juniors, TV House Party, Captain Corky, contributions to the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon as well as production of the Empty Stocking Fund for 24 years. His team that covered Expo67 was recognized for the quality of the work that exceeded coverage by the U.S. networks. Mel was proud and dedicated to his work. He rubbed shoulders with personalities like Miss Canada, Chubby Checker, Tommy Hunter, Andy Kim and Billy Graham, and a few Prime Ministers along the way. As manager he disliked union negotiations.
Mel took to golf, claiming it to be by far, the hardest sport in the world. He did not tell his wife about the cost of green fees on his trips. He played old time hockey over several years and continued to rip up the score sheet. He didn’t like to pass. He was also an avid and accomplished skier.
With his wife Donna, they built their home in Milllidgeville, remaining until the mid nineties where they divided their time between Saint John and their cottage in Oak Bay. Mel was a devoted husband for over 65 years. He’s been referred to as a good guy on several occasions. Mel and Donna travelled extensively and had a wide circle of friends. There were many, many late nights and long weekends.
Mel leaves his son, Marc (Mary Susan); granddaughter, Kara Lister (Ryan); great-grandchildren, Nora and Mack.and granddaughter, Laura Johnston (Aldin Pezerovic); he was precedeased by a brother, Deputy Fire Chief Ronald Johnston in 2012; Mel is also survived by his niece, Lee-Ann Johnston and nephew, Stephen Johnston (Lorrie), and their children, Demi and Drew.
Our family expresses their sincere appreciation to the Shannex staff for their understanding and care for Mel, especially following the death of Mel’s wife in 2024 and most recently respect for his self determination. You will not be forgotten.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, (506-634-7424). and as per Mel’s wishes there will be no visitation. A private remembrance will take place in the spring. It would be appreciated that any donations in Mel’s memory can be made to the North End Food Bank Association.
