Obituary of May Hannah Richmond (nee Tyson)
Passed away peacefully on March 27, 2025, after an eight year journey with Alzheimer’s disease, maintaining her kind and gentle demeanor until the very end of a well-lived life. Born on May 9, 1941, in Ayr, Scotland, May was one of four daughters of John and Annie Tyson. She was predeceased by her younger twin sisters, Joan and Anne, and is survived by her older sister, Betty, who resides in Ayrshire.
In 1965, May married her love, Jack Richmond, a handsome young man from her hometown. Together, they embarked on a new adventure, crossing the Atlantic aboard the Empress of Canada to begin a life in Ottawa. There, they built a beautiful home and a strong, loving family. May and Jack shared many wonderful years until his passing in 2000. She was a devoted mother to her son, Jack, who passed away in 2018, and her cherished daughter, Jennifer, along with her « bonus son »—son-in-law David Duncan. Among her greatest joys were her two grandsons, Craig, who passed in 2017, and Neil, whom she adored.
May was a well-known and beloved figure in her community. For over 30 years, she nurtured young minds as « Miss May, » the cherished nursery school teacher at Glen Cairn Co-operative Preschool in Kanata. Her love for children extended beyond the classroom, as she attended many community events—sometimes dressed as a clown! She was often spotted riding her bicycle around town, always ready to stop for a friendly chat. Every child she taught left a lasting impression on her heart, just as she did on theirs.
May was a vibrant, social butterfly who embraced life with warmth and enthusiasm. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by her many friends and all who knew her.
A Celebration of May’s Life will be held at the Highland Park Cemetery, 2037 McGee Side Road, Carp on Thursday, April 10, 2025 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Inurnment to follow.
