Our beautiful, spirited Mum passed away peacefully at Belmont House on February 20, 2025 at the age of 104. She will be missed by her children David (Carol), Karen (David), Erica (Geoff), her granddaughter Rachel, step-grandchildren Jason (Karen) and step-great-grandchildren and friends. May was born and grew up in White River, Ontario when the only way to travel across Canada was by train. She completed her secondary education at St. Joseph’s School in Toronto and entered St. Michael’s Hospital nursing school, graduating in 1943. She happily worked at St. Michael’s Hospital in the Obstetrics Department until she married our dad, John Kerr, in 1945. They eventually settled in Montreal, where May assumed the responsibilities of an Anglican minister’s wife. Children followed shortly thereafter and became the focus of her life. Most women worked in the home in the late 1950’s but May, decided to return to the nursing profession. She loved nursing and was so happy working in the Nursery caring for newborns. In 1966, May and John relocated to Thunder Bay when John became the Dean of Students at Lakehead University. May joined the Port Arthur General Hospital nursing staff and spent the next 14 years doing what she loved best. In 1980, May and John moved to Toronto, where May rejoined the nursing staff at St. Michael’s Hospital. May retired in 1990 at the age of 70. She and John enjoyed a number of years of travelling, before John was diagnosed with ALS and passed away in 1995. May eventually moved into Belmont House and spent 18 years as a resident. She celebrated her 104th birthday with her family and the staff at Belmont House. We can’t thank the Belmont House staff enough for the wonderful care and kindness they gave our Mum. A family celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
