Obituary of Matthew Eddy
With broken hearts, the family of Matthew Eddy, age 38, of CBS, NL announces his passing following a courageous battle with brain cancer. Matthew passed peacefully at the Miller Centre on February 15, 2025.
Matthew was predeceased by both sets of grandparents, Frank and Adeline Eddy, and Shirley Best, Wesley Thomas & Stanley Best whose love and guidance helped shape the man he became.
Matthew was a loving husband to his wife of 13 years, Sarah, and a devoted father to his children: Dorian, Adeline and Mary; and best dog, Major. Matthew was a proud son to Ted and Charmaine Eddy of Lead Cove and cherished his role as a brother to Corinna (Chris) Fagan of CBS and an uncle to their children, Nick (Julia) and great nephew Colter, Alex, Kira and Kaitlyn. He is also survived by his in-laws, Derrick and Cora Eastman of Glenwood, his sister-in-law Rhonda (Danny) Loughlin of Burin and their children, Janelle and Joel, as well as his brother-in-law Myles Eastman of Glenwood and his daughter Raya.
In addition to his family, Matthew was blessed with many friends who became an integral part of his life. Matthew leaves behind a large circle of aunts, uncles, cousins and amazing friends. Including his co-workers at Lawton’s Home Health Care (Aim Services) and the 1st CBS Scouts Group. Special friends, Rob, Brian, Travis, Peter, Gary and Scout wife Suzanne, are left to help carry on his memories.
Matthew grew up in Lead Cove, NL where he found his love for the outdoors and fishing. He spent his early adulthood in Spencerville, ON. His first boss and mentor were Tom Welsh, who he fondly spoke of. Upon his return to Newfoundland, Matthew settled in Conception Bay South.
Matthew and Sarah met in 2012. During their first date they spoke of wanting children and getting married. Wasting no time, Matthew proposed in December 2012, Dorian was born in December 2013, they were married in August 2014, and twin daughters, Adeline and Mary, were born in April 2017.
A true outdoorsman at heart, and an avid hobby fisherman, Matthew spent hours fishing in oceans and ponds during the spring, summer and winter. He always dreamt of catching a shark on his rod!
His love for the outdoors and nature was matched only by his generosity and dedication to others. Following a Provincial Jamboree in June 2022, Matthew was invested into the 1st CBS Scouts Group as a volunteer scouter. He has been a dedicated volunteer, spending time teaching and inspiring youth throughout his cancer diagnosis. In Dec 2023, Matthew was awarded the “Award for Fortitude” from Scouts Canada for his continued dedication through personal diversity.
Matthew’s family and friends were most important to him. He thrived in a crowd and even in his final days he enjoyed seeing people come to visit. Matthew was hardworking and dedicated to anything he attempted. Coming from a musical family Matthew’s lifelong love for music was fueled and surrounded him in his final days.
Matthew’s legacy will live on through the love he shared with his family and friends, his dedication to service, and the indomitable courage he showed throughout his life. His memory will forever be cherished, and he will always be remembered as a cherished son and brother, loving father, devoted husband, and friend whose impact was felt by all.
Matthew’s family would like to acknowledge the compassion and care shown to Matthew and our family during this journey. Thank-you to the Doctors, nurses, and staff at both the H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre and the Palliative Care unit at the Miller Centre, and the team from community health outreach in CBS.
Matthew will be remembered for his boundless energy, infectious smile, and his deep love for his family and friends. And we all know Matthew will be catching the biggest fish, sharks and tuna and watching over his family.
