Obituary of Mary Jean Boyes (MacKay)
With profound sadness, we share that our vibrant, brilliant and beloved Mom passed away in hospital after suffering a stroke. We are grateful that she was able to live independently in the house she loved until her last day.
Mary Jean MacKay was the daughter of Rev. Dr. Clifton MacKay (d.1994) and Dorothy Murchison (d.1995) and older sister of Norman MacKay (d. 2015). Born in Kirkland Lake, ON, Mary Jean moved with her family to Toronto and then Montreal, where her father was the senior minister at Knox Crescent Kensington Presbyterian Church. From an early age, Mary Jean’s skills in meeting and talking to people, sincere interest in their lives, and capacity to remember them forever endeared her to all. Her lifelong friendships, as well as those made in recent years, are a testament to her engaging and charming company.
Mom earned a B.A. at McGill University and completed her teaching qualifications at The McGill School for Teachers (Macdonald Campus). She met Claude Trevor Boyes in Montreal on Easter Sunday 1958. The two were married on Easter weekend 1962. Living first in Orillia and then Kitchener, they enjoyed a happy, loving marriage and a true partnership with a shared commitment to their children. They were married for 59 years, until Dad’s death in 2021.
Mom was a beautiful singer and a formally trained pianist who could play any song by ear. She shared these talents at many family gatherings and as the pianist for the primary Sunday school at St. Andrew’s Church in Kitchener, where she was a member for 61 years.
Together with Dad, Mom was a church elder, volunteer, Scottish country dancer, tennis player, bird lover and beach walker. She was also one of four remaining members of her bridge club, formed more than 50 years ago. Mom loved few things more than a summer day on Cameron Lake, a road trip to the South Carolina or Maine seashore, and the views of Lake Huron’s blue waters in Bayfield. Another love was chocolate ice cream, which topped her list of health foods.
After Dad died, Mom developed new skills and independence and embraced the digital world. She stayed in touch with her grandchildren by phone, text and video, and cultivated wonderful relationships with each one. And she remained an encouraging and extremely proud mother and grandmother.
Mom lived her life in colour, from her warm and inviting home to her love for fresh flowers and her elegant personal style. No matter what life brought, she was beautifully dressed with a touch of sparkle and ready to face the day with lipstick in place.
Mary Jean is survived by her children, Sue-Ellen (Jeff Schreiter), Jeannie-Anne (Dwayne Priestman), Jamie (Christie Halpenny), and Jeremy (Katherine Young), and her beloved grandchildren: Cullen (Jennifer), Fiona, Liam, Emma, Hayley, Allison, Sadie, Rory, Finlay and Lucy. She also leaves behind her faithful toy poodle, Willow.
The family thanks the medical teams at Grand River Hospital Acute Care, Orange Ambulance and Hamilton General Hospital ICU for their tremendous efforts and care on Mom’s behalf.
Visitation will take place at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S, Waterloo, on Friday, June 6 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 54 Queen St. N, Kitchener, on Saturday, June 7 at 1:00 pm. Colourful clothing and dramatic lipstick are encouraged. If desired, donations may be made in Mary Jean’s honour to the May Court Club of Kitchener-Waterloo or to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Kitchener. Donations to these organizations may be made by phone or online through Erb & Good Family Funeral Home at (519) 745-8445.
