Obituary of Mary Hanlan
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Aileen Hanlan (Hammill) of Ottawa Ontario. She passed away peacefully on March 18, 2025, at the age of 89 at St. Patrick’s Care Home.
Mary was predeceased by her parents Gerald and Margaret Hammill, brother John, husband Charles Edward (Ned) Hanlan, son Gregory, sister-in-law Tori, and former spouse Wallace Colquhoun (divorced). Mary is survived by her children Daniel, Marilyn and Tracey, her grandchildren Jessica, Graeme, Imahgynne, Sabrina, Kai and Jacob, her great grandchildren Aidan, Owen and Brooklynn, and her step-children Gordon and Elizabeth.
Mary was born January 9, 1936, in Kitchener Ontario and was raised in Edmonton Alberta, where she met her first husband Wally Colquhoun and had their first child Gregory. Shortly after they moved to Calgary and had Daniel, Marilyn and Tracey. Mary moved to Ottawa in 1970 and lived there for the rest of her life. She married her second husband Ned Hanlan in 1982.
A devout catholic, Mary lived in convents during her childhood where she was educated and raised by nuns. Mary was a member of the Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Parish in Kanata for many years. She was an alumni of Algonquin College’s Social Work program (1972) and later worked at the Royal Ottawa Hospital as the Director of Volunteer Services. Mary also enjoyed doing volunteer work the Schizophrenia Society, The Distress Center and Meals on Wheels Program.
Mary spent her leisure time at the cottage on the Upper Rideau where Ned and herself enjoyed sailing, water skiing, swimming, having campfires and relaxing with her family and friends. Mary and Ned also enjoyed travelling and took many trips with their good friends including the Bernier’s. Mary had a strong love for the theater, Ballet, opera, listening to classical music especially the piano. Mary was an amazing seamstress and thoroughly enjoyed making dresses and clothes for her two daughters and granddaughter and was incredibly generous. Mary and Ned loved to entertain family and friends and always showed everyone a good time with excellent food, great music and lots of laughs sitting by the fireplace sipping on a nightcap.
Mary was devoted to her son Gregory who suffered from schizophrenia since his early 20’s. She was a facilitator at the Royal Ottawa Hospital, helping educate and support other families in being able to understand the illness and how to access services.
Mary’s compassion, warmth and witty sense of humor touched many lives. She is and was the best mother, always there to console and support her children with words of wisdom and the best hugs that made you feel heard and loved.
Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Mass at St. Patrick’s Home, 2865 Riverside Drive, Saturday, April 12 at 10:00 am and a Graveside Ceremony at Pinecrest Cemetery, 2500 Baseline Road on the same date at 2:00 pm.
