It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Patricia “Pat” Thomas on
May 12, 2025, at Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, N.S.
Born in Point Tupper, N.S. in 1926, Pat was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary Anne
Thomas, the youngest of their seven children. Pat attended the Hamilton Memorial Hospital
Nursing Program in North Sydney and graduated as an RN in 1948. From here, she attended
Ottawa University in 1950 where she received a Diploma in Public Health Nursing. Pat worked
as a Public Health Nurse for 13 years before beginning her career as an RN at Saint Martha’s
Hospital in Antigonish in 1963 where she remained until her retirement in 2001.
Pat leaves behind her niece, Frances Warner; nephews, Gillis Cloake (Viola) and Danny Thomas
(Judy); grandnephews and grandnieces, Andrew Warner (Melissa), Erin Warner, Shannon
MacNeil (Bill), Michael Thomas, and Katie Hussynec (Adam); great grandnieces and great
grandnephews, Daniel, Maggie, Drew, Jack, Gabe, Jessie, Elle, Ryan, and Jack; chosen family
Albert Warner; and her special companions, Beau Gene and Winston Burgess. Pat was
predeceased by her siblings, William, Anna, Michael (Marion), Sadie, Evelyn, and Helen (Berkie);
and niece, Taira Cloake.
A woman of deep faith, Pat was a devout member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Port Hawkesbury,
N.S. She lived a very charitable life, never seeking recognition. Her dedication to the service of
others stretched far beyond her chosen profession. Her selflessness and compassion extended
beyond the doors of the hospital, into her community, and into her family home. In retirement,
she proudly cared for each of her siblings as they neared the end of their lives. In her later
years, Pat found tremendous joy spending time with family whom she loved beyond measure.
Pat was the epitome of patience and humility. She led our family by quiet example, always
understanding, forever empathetic, and a genuine desire to support people in need. The things
she held most dear were her family, her faith, and her profession. She will be dearly missed by
all who knew and loved her.
The family would like to sincerely thank Inverness County Home Support Society staff, doctors,
nurses, and Palliative Care team at the Strait Richmond Hospital for their compassionate care.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Green’s Funeral Home in Port Hawkesbury. Visitation
will be held at Green’s Funeral Home on Friday May 16, 2025, from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-
