Osborne (MacKeil), Mary Lorraine – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Lorraine (MacKeil) Osborne on December 28, 2024, at her home, after a courageous two-year battle with ALS. Mary was born in 1953 in Urbania, Nova Scotia, to Lois and Clare MacKeil. She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Walt; her devoted sons, Jason and Nolan; her cherished grandchildren, Dylan and Keeley; her mother, Lois MacKeil; and her siblings, Brenda (Wilfred Jordan), Claudia (Larry Shackleton), Philip (Betty), Michael (Heather), and Stephen (Anne). Mary was predeceased by her father, Clare MacKeil; and her brother-in-law, Rick Osborne, who also bravely battled ALS. She shared a close bond with her brothers, sisters, and in-laws, as well as her many nieces and nephews.
Mary was a devoted stay-at-home mom who dedicated herself to raising her boys until they started school. She later worked part-time and eventually full-time at Canada Post in the Enfield Post Office until her retirement in 2013. While there, she loved bringing the magic of Christmas by helping Santa write letters. From little league to old-timers, Mary and her mom, Lois, were loyal fans of Jason and Nolan’s ball and hockey games. She was also an avid curling fan, who rarely missed a match.
Mary cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren, who brought her immense joy. She and Keeley enjoyed solving the daily Wordle together and creating monthly art drawings, a special tradition they both treasured. Dylan fondly remembers surprising Mary, and the fun and games they shared in the pool. Mary’s love for her family was at the heart of everything she did. Her famous nacho dip was a must at every family gathering and her beautiful flower gardens and window boxes were always admired.
At the family cottage on Grand Lake, Mary found joy in campfire evenings and boat rides with Walt, savouring the sun, sunsets, and moonlight. She loved road trips to Bangor, vacations to Florida, California, the Caribbean, and two recent trips to Newfoundland to see icebergs and Gros Morne. Friday night suppers at Curly’s and Shooters were a cherished tradition.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Cecil Dixon and Emily Wells at the ALS Society for their compassionate care and support throughout Mary’s journey.
Her memory will forever be cherished by her family and friends, whose lives are richer for having known her. Cremation has taken place, there will not be a visitation or service, a family celebration will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the ALS Society of Nova Scotia in Mary’s honour.
