Mary Helen « Tish » Austin-Smith
Mary Helen
« Tish » Austin-Smith
April 22,
1933-February 3, 2025.
Born in New Waterford, Cape Breton, long before
there was a causeway. A coal-miner’s daughter. Nursing Officer, RCAF.
Tish loved watching baseball and football and classic movies. Scrub
nurse extraordinaire at Tompkins County Hospital, Ithaca, NY. Later,
served in the first ICU/CCU unit in Kentville, NS. Union organizer and
President of the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union. Knit us scarves during a
year of hospitalization for TB. Made the best penuche-and-butter tarts
and seafood chowder, and pie. Rocked us in her rocking chair. Devoured
mystery novels and would settle down to watch the returns of a contest
for dogcatcher, so much did she love elections. Couldn’t
carry a tune in a bucket. Suffered no fools. Shot you a look and then
asked where was the body she needed to bury. How deep should she dig?
Stood up for us. Told us we were her oldest best, her middle best, her
youngest best. Let us stay home from school for random reasons. Cried
over our lost dog decades later. Loved Glace Bay and walking along
Dominion Beach, gained and lost a Caper accent as the situation
required. She loved swimming. Crossed her arms. She smiled when
offered a strong cup of tea. We loved her
so.
Tish was predeceased by her parents Leo and
Annie Ellsworth, and three younger siblings, Garfield, Anne, and Joey.
She is survived by her children, Brenda (Richard) of Winnipeg MB,
Peter (Gabrielle) of Medford, and Lesley, of Wolfville, and by a
grandson, Ian, also in Winnipeg. She was « Auntie
Tish » to much-loved nieces and nephews in Canada and the US.
Her adoring husband, Peter Austin-Smith Sr., to whom she was married
for 62 years, also predeceased her. Apart for five years, they will
now rest together near the home they filled with such joy.
We thank everyone who cared for mom over the
last few years. Special thanks to the staff of Dykeland Lodge in
Windsor. Donations in her name can be made to Planned Parenthood
Canada, Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, or to the Valley Regional
Hospital Foundation. Final arrangements entrusted to the White Family
Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
