McELWAIN; Mary Grace – with profound sadness, we announce the passing of Mary Grace McElwain, an indomitable woman whose strength was perfectly balanced by her middle name, Grace – a rare quality she embodied throughout her extraordinary life.
Born and raised in Toronto, Mary was the cherished baby of her family. Adored by her older siblings—Beverly, Maureen, Paul, Jerry, and Bobby—and doted on by her loving parents, Robert and Mary, she grew up surrounded by an abundance of affection, even indulged with a pet monkey as a child.
Later, Mary found her soulmate in the gregarious and handsome Harvie McElwain. They married June 20, 1964. Their story was the envy of fairy tales; a union built on mutual admiration, devotion, and a shared zest for laughter and family.
Together, they created a home brimming with love, raising three children: Leslie, Brad, and Wade. For Mary, motherhood was her greatest joy. She poured her boundless energy into nurturing, and empowering her children to embrace the world with courage and ambition. Her pride in them was immeasurable.
After forty fulfilling years at Conestoga College, with her kids dispersed around the globe, Mary started her newest chapter. Mary extended her motherly warmth to the international students she welcomed into her home, fostering a sense of family that crossed cultures and borders. Her devotion to her loved ones was steadfast, and her protective nature was a testament to her fierce loyalty.
Mary was a woman of immense character and quiet strength, preferring to direct the spotlight to those around her rather than bask in it herself. She upheld a home filled with love, structure, and respect. Dinner was at 6 p.m. sharp, and if anyone wavered, Harvie would call on Mary’s behalf for ‘special invitations’ ensuring no one took her standards lightly.
Holidays at Mary’s home were nothing short of magical. Thanksgiving feasts, Christmas celebrations sprinkled with her unique touch, and countless gatherings on the family farm reflected her passion for creating moments of joy, connection, and tradition. The consummate hostess, everyone who crossed her threshold left feeling loved and cherished.
A woman of many layers, Mary possessed sharp wit, observational intelligence, and a generous heart. She was deeply proud of her granddaughters, Zoé and Violet, who brought her endless joy, as well as her little cuddle buddy, Jake.
Mary was truly one of a kind. She was a connoisseur of crispy bacon and buttered toast, gooey butter tarts, and a true Werther’s Original. She perfected the “leather look” as a former “professional tanner,” carried herself with effortless flair in leopard print and anything « golden », and loved mums in full bloom. Her mornings began with coffee and Breakfast Television, and she could often be found delighting in cooking & home decorating shows or trying her luck at the slot machines, always with her signature dry humor and unshakable spirit. Driving was right turns only, and « pull through » parking spots an added bonus!
Now reunited with her beloved Harvie, she walks hand in hand with him on a celestial beach, deciding what to have for dinner, knowing that their kids and grandchildren will be okay.
To know Mary was to be a part of her family—a sacred inner circle where everyone felt special, valued, and truly seen. She was a force of love and light, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know her.
A celebration of her life will take place in the summer of 2025.
