Mummy, Mum, Maw, Mom or May. A woman known for her patience, positive nature, gentleness, loyalty, kindness, but more importantly for her incredible strength and endurance. What a Lady!
Mum’s journey began in Montréal on January 26, 1936, by her given name of Marie Cecile Alice Gendron handed to her by her parents Louise Haines and Henri Gendron. Time flies, and Mum entered into adult life as a student of Business Administration at Sir George Williams College. With her charming good looks she became a model for Dalmy’s and Olgivy’s department stores in Montreal. Eventually Mum soon began her 32 year long career with Electrolux Canada.
Mary wasn’t all business, family was the centre of her attention. She married Herman Astles, a marriage that produced three children, Tamara (Tami), Cyndi and Ronnie. Mary regularly demonstrated her cooking and baking skills with our Sunday night family dinners making sure we be together. Between her career and home life Mary created distraction from city life by taking us on regular retreats to Plattsburgh and Lake Champlain New York, where the beach, picnics and shopping highlighted summertime memories.
Mary certainly was busy, yet she also found enjoyment and pleasure through her sewing machine. Often times staying up to the wee hours to create a sharp new fashionable dress or stylish outfit to wear to work that morning. Seeing a Vogue or McCalls pattern brings back so many fond memories.
Mary was a time finder, adding guitar playing and singing to her busy schedule. I can still hear her voice singing “Quand le soleil dit bonjour aux montagnes” and “You are my Sunshine” among other songs.
Time once again brought about family change, so Mum’s career took her from Montréal to Burlington, Ontario.
Childhood friend Larry Boyle entered her life and they found new happiness with the acquisition of a cottage on Isabella Lake, near Parry Sound. Another happy escape from suburban life. Mary was quite shy but witty. Travel was incorporated into their mutual fondness of Trade Shows where they found many new friendships. Our love and passion for animals was a gift from our Mum early on. She so loved her dogs Misty and Tequila (KiKi).
This chapter of Mum’s life ended when Larry passed away and Mary continued to live an independent life in Burlington until the age of 87, surrounded by and with the support of her ever-growing family. Mary was so proud of her Grandchildren; Lee, Kristen, Natalie, Michael, Erik, Ronnie Jr, and Great grandchildren; Arianna, Aiden, Bruce, and Jaime.
Mary showered her entire family with love and in turn was adored and loved by all of us.
Once again, time crept up on Mum and caused a weakening of her health. This necessitated her move into a long term care facility in Oakville where she resided for almost two years. On Sunday March 30th, 2025 Mum’s body could no longer sustain her and she was no longer able to carry on. Peacefully in her sleep, she passed from this world to the next. Always treasured and loved. Always remembered and missed. As per Mary’s request, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Rest Peacefully Mummy ❣️
