Mary Ann B. McCuaig
1949-2024
Mary Ann McCuaig passed away peacefully on December 23, 2024, at the Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg. She is survived by her loving husband, Ken; daughters Erin McCuaig and Heather Cowles (Jason Cowles); sister Geraldine Saville; and her cherished grandsons Shaye Terin McCuaig Parker, Samuel Kenneth Cowles, and Isaac Alfred Cowles.
Born and raised in Rivers, Manitoba, Mary Ann spent her early childhood there before her family relocated to the new Trans-Canada Pipelines pumping station #68 near Port Arthur, Ontario. She and her sister Geraldine attended the rustic Goram and Ware one-room school, a unique experience that shaped their early education. Later, they were bussed to McKenzie Public School in Shunia, and Mary Ann subsequently graduated from Hillcrest High School in Port Arthur, where she trained to become a legal secretary. She began her professional career at the law firm of Young and Clark, working for Rod Clark for a decade until his appointment as a Provincial Court Judge.
During this time, Mary Ann met her life partner, Ken, and they married shortly thereafter. Their family grew with the arrival of daughter Erin, followed by Heather after their move to Winnipeg due to Ken’s career advancement. Mary Ann dedicated herself to being a stay-at-home mom, engaging her daughters in swimming, skating, Highland dance, and gymnastics. Once her girls were in school full-time, she returned to the work force and secured a position with the University of Manitoba’s Inter-Library Loan Department, where she dedicated over twenty-five years before retiring.
An avid traveler, Mary Ann and Ken embraced their love for adventure together, camping throughout Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, Minnesota, and North Dakota. They also explored England, Scotland, and Wales by motor caravan with friends Pat and Sandy Will. Mary Ann regularly accompanied Ken to Canadian Infantry Association conferences across Canada, where she formed lasting friendships and explored the vast beauty of her country, proudly proclaiming that she had seen Canada from coast to coast to coast.
Upon Ken’s retirement, the couple enjoyed cruising to destinations in Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, Panama, and throughout the Caribbean, often joined by friends. Their summers were spent at the family cottage at historic Silver Islet, Ontario, along the stunning shores of Lake Superior.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place, and there will be no funeral. The family plans to celebrate her life next summer at the cottage following a private interment in the family plot at Riverside Cemetery in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Harris, Dr. Bulloch, and the dedicated medical and nursing staff on 5 South at Victoria General Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary Ann’s memory can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba, Cancer Ride or a charity of your choice.
Mary Ann will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
