It is with heavy hearts and fond memories that we announce
the passing of Marvin « Marv. » L. Mitchell, age 86, a beloved
father, grandfather, friend, and community pillar, at the Charlotte
County Hospital, St Stephen, New Brunswick on Monday December 30,
2024.
Born on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, the son of the late
Richard and Tina Mitchell.
He lived a life as rich and deep as the seas he loved,
leaving behind tales of a man who lived for his passions and cherished
his people.
Marv dedicated his life to the herring, not just fishing
them, but celebrating them with a devotion that bordered on reverence.
A proud fisherman, he spent decades braving the waves, perfecting his
craft, and earning his place as a local legend. Whether it was
seining, shutting off, or teaching his son Francis the ways of the
trade, Marv found his purpose on the water.
But perhaps his most cherished pastime was spinning yarns of
the old days, weaving tales so captivating that even the fifth time
hearing it was still met with laughter and wonder.
His grandkids were the pride of his life, and he relished
every moment with them, ensuring they grew up knowing the joys of
fishing, storytelling, and the good old days. He filled every room he
was in with laughter, and his was always the loudest. Marv had an
unwavering love for kippers – he bought so many that local
stores had a hard time keeping them stocked! No meal was safe from his
advocacy for the humble smoked fish, nor was any family gathering free
of the familiar smell.
Marv was immensely proud of his son Francis, who carried on
his fishing legacy, and his grandchildren, who gave him endless
reasons to smile. He was often found in the company of his eldest son
Patrick, driving around looking for fish and sharing coffees, trying
to convince him to help him in his ever-growing list of projects that
he loved to keep himself busy with. Marv took great pride in his
community, sharing his wisdom, kindness, and stories with anyone lucky
enough to cross his path. He has dearly missed his beloved Sandra, and
the time they spent together on the water and with their grandkids,
and comfort can be found in knowing they are together once
again.
Marv leaves behind a family and community forever grateful
for his humour, warmth, and larger-than-life spirit. Though the sea
now holds one less fisherman, its waves will forever echo with his
laughter and the stories of a life well lived.
Marv is survived by his sons; Patrick Mitchell and Francis
Mitchell (April), his cherished grandchildren; Allison (Callum),
Krysten (Keith), Richard, Jack, Belle, and Revay « The Baby »
; brother; James Mitchell, sister; Evelyn Huntley, his extended family
including stepdaughters; Sharon Savage, Crystal Kent, and Sherry
« Angel » Casey, stepson; Timothy Libby, all of their
children; Matthew, Justin, and Adam Libby, Gary, Alisha and Jeremy
Roberts, Miranda and Jon Smith, Jocelyn Curran, Amber Leavitt, Megan
Roy, Sean Kent and Nicole Duchesneau. In addition to this
large and loving family, Marv leaves behind many great-grandchildren,
nieces, nephews, who carry forward his legacy of love, laughter and
storytelling.
In addition to Marvin’s parents he
was predeceased by his beloved companion; Sandra Libby,
brother; Greyson Mitchell, sister; Marion Breton (née
Mitchell) and her husband, Edmund Breton and their son, his nephew,
Michael Breton.
In honour of Marv, family and friends are invited to
celebrate his life on Saturday, January 4,
2025, at 2pm on Jackson’s Wharf, Campobello
Island, New Brunswick.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that you share a
story or two of your own, as that’s the tribute he
would’ve loved the most. Condolences can be sent
to the family online at www.mehanfuneralhome.ca
You will be missed, but your legacy will live on in every tale we tell
and every time we set sail.
Fair winds and following seas aboard the Four Aces, Marv.
You were the very best!
