Martha Gonsalves Obituary
Gonsalves, Martha Virginia, born in the Canal Zone, Panama on June 26, 1945, died peacefully on Monday, January 13, 2025, at her home in Scarborough, Ontario, with her dear friend Katsuaki Komatsu by her side. She was the eldest of eight children of Norman S. Psaila of Guyana (formerly British Guiana) and Virginia M. Rodríguez of Costa Rica. She grew up in Guyana where she graduated from St. Rose’s High School, and in September 1963, she married Clement Gonsalves. Martha worked as a secretary at several different firms in Georgetown until May 1974, when she and Clement moved to Toronto where many of Clement’s family members were already living. Their marriage ended in 1990. Martha studied Spanish on her own and thoroughly enjoyed using it in conversation and song whenever the opportunity arose. She worked for many years at the Bell Telephone Company in Toronto, retiring at age 50 with a disability pension due to her health condition. She enjoyed attending gatherings and dances held by the large St. Rose’s alumni community in Toronto and other organizations. She kept in close contact with her siblings and visited them in the States, as well as family in Costa Rica, before her health made travelling too difficult for her. She was of great help to our brothers Steve and Norman John and our Dad when they moved to Toronto. Martha is survived by her dear friend Katsuaki Komatsu; sister Cecilia Jackson of Brandon, Manitoba; sister Phyllis P. Hillery (Dennis), niece Myla Tebbutt (Brian), and great nephew Bradley Tebbutt, all of Rockwall, TX; sister Virginia Psaila Crandall of Garland, TX; niece Gigi Causey (Andrew Bowler), and great nephew Maddox Bowler of Los Angeles CA; and ex-husband Clement Gonsalves. She was predeceased by her parents, a brother Joseph in infancy, her brothers Norman John (2009) and Stephen (2017), and her sister Anna Causey (2021). Cremation has taken place. There will be no service. A private interment will take place at a later date at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Mississauga, Ontario. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Martha’s dear friend Katsuaki Komatsu for the loving care he gave our sister. Condolences may be placed at www.ridleyfuneralhome.com
