MARJORIE DICKIE
It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our mother and wife, Marjorie Catharine Dickie nee Bowman, in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, on Feb. 26, 2025, at the age of 101. She was born in Saskatoon July 12, 1923, the daughter of Irvin and Phoebe Bowman nee Herner. She spent her childhood in Kitchener, surrounded by Phoebe’s large family. She graduated from the University of Toronto with a Master’s degree in Biochemistry and then taught at Smith College in Massachussets. On returning to the University of Toronto, she completed a PhD and met her husband. They were subsequently married in 1952. After several moves, they settled in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. She is survived by Lloyd, her husband of 72 years, Dartmouth, her children, Kate, Halifax, Sarah Hayes (Ron) , Kingsport, and Allan (Lucy), Weymouth; by her grandchildren Ben, Joel and Michaela Hayes all of Kingsport, Michael, Digby, and Katie Jane (Hugo), Canning; and by her great grandchildren, Ellie and Emelia, Canning.
Marjorie taught physiology for many years at Dalhousie University. She loved to teach and was the family dictionary and history buff. Marjorie loved life and had many interests. She enjoyed tennis, bird watching, gardening, swimming and studying French and translating Latin with her good friend Eileen. She was a docent for many years at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Working with children delighted her and she was enthralled with her great granddaughters. She was infamous for her creative use of duct tape. She was ruthless at crokinole and scrabble, but always with a smile. Her friends appreciated her sense of humour and penchant for puns. She travelled widely with her husband, to Asia, Europe, and South America. Over many years she explored contemplative spiritual traditions, including studies at the Atlantic School of Theology and the way of Gurdjieff.
You are in our hearts, mom, through the songs and love you brought us, a wonderful gift that we will cherish forever.
We wish to thank the Sullivan sisters for their loyal friendship and loving care of “Margie”.
There will be a private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
