Write a Tribute
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Marjorie Ayako Wallace on January 6, 2025. Marj passed peacefully, surrounded by love, having shaped her final moments with the same thoughtfulness and strength she brought to every part of her life.
Marj’s journey began on a rural farm in Kelowna, where she cultivated a resilient spirit and a grounded outlook on life. She left Kelowna to pursue her first year of nursing in Vancouver. Later in Vancouver, she met her future husband, and together they created a life filled with meaningful experiences. They enjoyed sailing, skiing, road trips, and even spent a year living abroad in Vienna, forming life-long friends. During this time, she also built a long-standing career at Telus, and she began Polynesian dance.
Her professional life at Telus was equally notable. In an era when women in technical careers were few, Marj carved out a meaningful path, blending her intellect with people skills and resilience. Despite the demands of her work and family, raising Danielle and Derek, she dedicated herself to helping others and was active in Polynesian dance, performing for countless charities. Once she retired, she continued to teach hula actively, even during her husband’s decline from MSA Parkinson’s Plus, where she was the sole caregiver.
For over five decades, Marj found joy and community in Polynesian dancing. Her passion extended far beyond the art itself—it was the friendships and connections she cherished most and others cherish as well. She brought warmth, humour, and a unique vitality to her hula community, just as she did in every circle of her life.
Marj’s final years were defined by her immense strength and resilience. After her diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer in 2020, she approached every challenge with quiet determination and grace. Even as her condition progressed, she continued teaching hula, attending treatments, and preparing for performances—showcasing a remarkable balance of toughness and compassion through to winter 2024.
Her legacy is one of resilience, warmth, inclusivity, and strength—both mental and physical. Marj’s friendly and welcoming nature was a beacon that drew people to her, creating deep and lasting connections. Her far-reaching impact touched not only her friends and family but also those who experienced her performances and the kindness she shared. She leaves behind a vibrant network of loved ones who will continue to carry her spirit forward.
This summer, we will celebrate Marj’s incredible life with a luau, honouring her passion for hula and her love of bringing people together. Marj’s family extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported her and us during this time. Your kindness and love are a testament to the extraordinary person she was.
Marj was predeceased by her husband, George Wallace. She is survived by her children, Derek Wallace (Misaki Sakata) and Danielle Wallace (Anthony Smith); her grandkids, Violet and Quintin Smith; her granddaughter, Kiah Kennedy; her siblings, Evelyn Tobler (Willy Tobler); Tony Ibaraki (Debbie Ibaraki); Stephen Ibaraki (Colleen Liptaj). She is also survived by her many beloved nieces and nephews, who cherished her warmth and provided her with help and support.
Details about Marj’s celebration of life in the summer will be shared soon. In the meantime, we encourage you to honour her by embracing life with warmth, resilience, and an open heart—just as she did. Her incredible life is a beacon for us all. She will be missed.
