Obituary of Mario Pino
On Monday, November 3, 2025, surrounded by love and family, Mario peacefully passed away at the Algoma Residential Community Hospice at the age of 77. Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing he is reunited with his beloved parents, the late Alfonso and Maria Pino.
Mario was a devoted brother to Teresa Danubio in Argentina (late Mario), late Geniale (Carmela), late Rosaria Bernardo (late Pasquale), Franco (Stella), Guerino (Franca), and Enrico (Lilliana). He was also a proud and caring uncle to his many nieces and nephews, who will always remember his kindness, patience, and quiet humor. He will also be missed by many cousins both here in Canada and Italy.
Born in Cleto, Cosenza, Italy, Mario grew up in a large, loving family whose values of hard work, humility, and togetherness guided him throughout his life. In 1962, as a young teenager, he journeyed to Canada with his mother and younger brother to reunite with the rest of the Pino family who had immigrated earlier.
After high school, Mario attended George Brown College, earning his Television Technician diploma. He later worked at Algoma Steel, where he was respected for his strong work ethic and quiet dedication. Mario devoted countless hours to managing his rental properties which were his pride and joy. Outside of work, he cherished his time with his “coffee club” friends at the mall and enjoyed many happy moments at Club 48 and the Marconi Club, where laughter, friendship, food and espresso were always in good supply. Those who knew him best will remember his signature phrase, “You don’t understand,” and the twinkle in his eye when he said it. He often claimed things “didn’t matter,” but everyone knew that Mario had a tendency to collect many things throughout his lifetime, but in the end the things that mattered the most to him were his family and those friends he surrounded himself with.
Mario’s family would like to express their deepest gratitude to all who supported them over the past months; friends, neighbors, and the medical community who cared for him with such skill and compassion. Special thanks are extended to the staff and doctors at Sault Area Hospital, including Doctors Gonzales, Xiao, Dawson, Booth, Lucio, Apostle, and Pearce, the Emergency Department, the 3C unit, and the Algoma District Cancer Program. A heartfelt thank-you to the extraordinary team at ARCH, whose compassion and care allowed Mario to spend his final days surrounded by the love of his family and friends.
Though he has left this world, Mario’s gentle nature, sense of humor, and unwavering kindness will live on in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know him.
Family and friends are invited to visit at Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758) on Friday, November 7, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Service in the Chapel at 1:00 p.m. Entombment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery Mausoleum.
Those wishing to honour Mario’s memory may make a donation to ARCH, the Sault Area Hospital Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
