Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Marion Joyce Butt (nee Harnett) of Lewisporte (was living at Orams Bethesda Manor, Gander until January), announce her peaceful passing after a lengthy illness at James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, NL on February 7, 2025, age 75 years
She was predeceased by husband, Gilbert (2022); special niece/daughter, Elizabeth (Betty) Harnett (1974); parents, Reuben and Stella Harnett (1973 and 2006, respectively); brothers Gerald, Harvey, Roland and Clarence; sister, Daisy Harnett; brothers-in-law, George Harnett, Frank Frost; parents-in-law, George Wilfred (1977) and Deitha Mary (Clarke) Butt (1990), special sister-in-law, Floella Amelia Merle Butt (2019).
She leaves to mourn her children, Carolyn (Clayton), Donny, and Elizabeth (Jason); grandcats Dudley, Kirby, and Minnie; sisters, Alma Frost, Florence Harnett; special cousins-in-law, Beulah Gruchy , Edward (Betty) Small; special PCA, Carrie Coates; the management, staff and residents of Oram’s Bethesda Manor 2 in Gander, NL, also many nieces, nephews and a large circle of friends and family members of the Harnett, Johnson, Clarke, and Butt families.
Marion was born on April 21, 1949 to the late Reuben and Stella Harnett in Campbellton, NL. She was the eighth of ten children. She attended Campbellton Salvation Army School (excelled in English) until the age of 16 when she moved to Lewisporte in 1965. From 1965 to 1971 she worked various childcare and home care jobs, as well as being a waitress at the Carson Hotel and was a clerk at Friereich’s Department Store for several years. She met her future husband, Gilbert Butt at Rideout’s drive-in at Campbellton in 1963 (she was 14 and he was 20). They married at the Salvation Army in Campbellton on November 26, 1971. She resided in Lewisporte with her husband and was a housewife and mother and returned to work in 1991 when her youngest child was nine years old. After her husband’s passing, Marion moved to a couple of personal care homes until finally settled in at Oram’s Bethesda Manor 2 in the spring of 2023.
Despite the many blessings in her life, Marion’s life was faced with many challenges due to her mental health issues and suffered many tragedies in her life. Her family wants her to be remembered as a kind, friendly, loving person and mother who was full of life and young at heart. Her first love was her three children, and many people in Lewisporte will remember her for her love of gardening. She loved making new friends and would talk away to just about anyone. She would give anybody the shirt off her back and would always help where needed. She made friends everywhere she went and was a wonderful singer. She had a huge love of country music, especially George Jones and Merle Haggard. She especially took pride in getting saved and accepting Jesus as her Lord and Savior in 2023.
The family would like to thank everyone involved in Mom’s care in the past three years until her passing. We would like to especially thank cousin Edward and Betty Small; family friends Peg Smith and Norma Jennings, and Mom’s special sister and nieces Alma Frost, Nancy Frost, and Joanne Frost for being there to help us with mom in anything she needed. God bless you all.
Mom loved animals. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marion’s memory may be made to an animal shelter/rescue of one’s choosing.
The public visitation will take place from Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home, Lewisporte, NL on Sunday, February 9, 2025 from 12-4 PM.
The Funeral will be held at Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home, Lewisporte, NL on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at 1 PM. The Interment will follow at St. Matthew’s United Cemetery, Lewisporte, NL.
Funeral Arrangements are entrusted to Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home, 262 Main Street, Lewisporte, NL.
