Obituary of Marion Anna Gilchrist (Travers)
On July 29, 2025, Marion passed peacefully while sleeping, at the astounding age of 108.
Born in Windsor, ON, in 1917, she was the daughter of the late Maisie (née Desjardin) and John Thibert.
Marion moved to St. Thomas with her first husband Mel Travers around 1949. Widowed while her children were still in high school, Marion cleaned houses, took in laundry, and later managed an apartment building in town. She also worked in the kitchen at the Legion, where she met her second husband, Charles Gilchrist. She became a “bonus mom” to his three children.
Over her lifetime, Marion overcame a multitude of health issues, including cancer, a broken hip, heart issues, a stroke and a broken pelvis. She rarely complained; just kept going. She was determined to get past any issue; one of the strongest women we knew.
She was selfless; taking in many family members over the years when they needed a place to stay. She offered to help with anything and everything. Later in life she crocheted prayer shawls for local church members, as well as countless blanket squares made to fit residents in wheelchairs, at a care facility in London. Her greatest joy was her family and being able to help others.
She was known for her cooking, baking, amazing canning (jams, pickles and more), and for a plethora of crafts, needlepoint, knitting and crocheting over the years. As well as for her sense of humour, and her cute sayings (“Holy Cats!”)
She is survived by her children, Pat Ripley and Frank Travers, along with her bonus children, Sandy Dubkowski (Ernie) and Jim Gilchrist (Lorraine). Marion will be missed by her grandchildren: Paula Gunn, Brian Ripley, Maureen Hickey, Sheilah Wedge, Shannon Hickey, Todd Gilchrist, Derek Gilchrist, Farrah Gilchrist, Paul Dubkowski, Julie Coffin, Chris Travers, Mandy Mannering, Bill Mannering, and their spouses. She will be fondly remembered by her 16 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Marion was predeceased by her first husband, Mel Travers (1962), and her second husband Charles Gilchrist (1998); her daughter Marie Elaine Travers (1948), daughter-in-law Judy Travers (2024), favourite son-in-law Bill Ripley (2023), her stepdaughter Joanne Hickey (2025), and her younger brother Wilfred Thibert.
Marion left a legacy of kindness, generosity, tenacity and love. She had a strong fanclub of family, neighbours and family friends. She was everyone’s “Granny” and we are all better for having known her. There will never be another like her.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held in early fall. Details will be announced at a later date.
Marion loved animals. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favourite pet charity/shelter or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160).
