CASTIGLIONE, Maria Yolande ‘Yolande’ –
Maria Yolande Castiglione (née Knopik), affectionately known as Yolande, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 22, 2025, with her family by her side at Lisaard House at the age of 69.
Born on June 12, 1955, in Dourges, France, to the late Cecille and Valdemar Knopik, Yolande’s life was full of devotion to her family, a passion for culture, and an unwavering faith.
Cherished wife of Joseph Castiglione, for 46 years. Beloved mother of Fabrizio (Angela) and Lorenzo (Mindy). Adored Nonna of Dominic, Lucas, Nathan, Kingston, Mathéo, and Iyla. Dear sister of Valdemar (late Marie-Jeanne), the late Christian (Marie Claude), Stanislas (Christine), and Dalila (Jacques). Lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Yolande’s journey led her from the quaint streets of Dourges to the heart of her beloved husband, Joseph. Their love story began in France and continued in Canada when Yolande joined Joseph two years after he immigrated. They were married on a beautiful summer day, July 1, 1978, and their union was blessed with laughter, love, and the joy of raising their two sons, Fabrizio and Lorenzo.
While Yolande worked for a short time upon arriving in Canada, she soon embraced the role of a stay-at-home mom, dedicating her life to raising her boys. She was their greatest cheerleader, whether it was watching Fabrizio perform martial arts or cheering on Lorenzo at his hockey games. Her support was unwavering, her presence a constant source of comfort and encouragement.
Yolande was an exceptional Nonna, who loved spending time with her grandchildren whether it was making crafts, watching movies, or exploring the park with them. It was in the simple moments spent with her grandchildren that Yolande found her greatest pleasure.
Her culinary skills were legendary—her spaghetti sauce, lasagna, and crepes were not merely meals but expressions of her love that will be remembered and cherished. She took pride in mastering five languages, a testament to her intelligence and her love for the world’s diverse cultures and was an avid reader.
Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. A devout Catholic, Yolande prayed daily, especially to the Blessed Mother. Her faith was not silent; it was a living, breathing part of her, evident in her actions, her words, and the peace that seemed to surround her.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Lisaard House for the compassion and care in Yolande’s final days. Your dedication and kindness did not go unnoticed during this difficult time. They also wish to thank their family and friends who have reached out and offered support.
As we bid farewell to Yolande, we do so with hearts full of gratitude for the time we were given with her. Her story lives on in the memories we cherish, the traditions we continue, and the love we share. Yolande’s journey was one of beauty, grace, and unwavering commitment to those she held dear. May she rest in peace, and may her legacy of love endure for generations to come
Resting at Corbett Funeral Home (95 Dundas St. N) where family and friends are invited to visit on Friday, February 28, 2025, from 6pm – 9pm. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 10am at St. Clement’s Roman Catholic Church (745 Duke St). Entombment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Our Lady of Assumption Mausoleum. Memorial donations made to St. Clement’s Church or Lisaard House in Yolande’s memory would be greatly appreciated by the family.
