MARIA CANDIDA TOSTE LEAL GOMES
November 21, 1937 – January 26, 2025
With her family by her side, our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grand Mother, and Aunt, Maria Candida passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 26 at the age of 87.
She is predeceased by her loving husband of nearly 50 years, Joao, her parents Joao Leal and Maria Candida Borges Toste, brother Francisco Leal(Ana), brother in laws Jose Manuel, brother in law and sister-in-law Manuel and Carminda Gomes.
She is survived by her daughters Lina (Jose), Vilma (Peter), and son Emanuel (Sonia). Grandchildren Cassandra, Colton, Tatum, Anthony, and Nathaniel. Great grandchildren Lucas, Scarlett and Rayder. Brother Joao Leal (Tereza), niece Elizabete Machado and nephews Manuel G. Gomes and Roberto Leal. Many cousins in Canada, the U.S.A. and Terceira, Azores.
Mom was born in Sao Sebastiao, Terceira Azores and lived there with her parents and two younger brothers Joao and Francisco until she met and married her lifelong partner Joao, from Cabo da Praia, in May of 1961. Shortly after they had Lina and Vilma, then immigrated to Canada and had Emanuel.
Growing up Mom and Dad enjoyed spending time as a family or visiting with friends. Whether it was a weekend visit, a day at the beach, or our basement singing and dancing and watching my dad play the harmonica. There was always an abundance of laughs and fun.
The Holidays were a special time that always included a lot of family, friends and food where everyone was always welcome. In the summers, Mom and Dad were often tending to their garden or visiting friends on the farm out of town. They never showed up empty handed, always gave what they could and never expected anything in return.
They also enjoyed travelling and spending time with friends and family in Mississauga, California, or going back to the Azores. They would also spend time at our Portuguese Church and Cultural centre to ensure that our heritage and traditional festivals would continue and thrive in our community through her and our father’s support.
Like our father, my mother was a devout Catholic. Rarely missing a Sunday mass. She often found her peace and resolve just spending time with God and her Rosary. It would eventually provide her with the peace she needed to end her long-time suffering and join Dad in her new home. May she now rest comfortably by his side.
Mom we all love you and will miss you dearly.
We want to thank the staff and management at Poseidon Care Home who often do so much with so little. Your warmth and care over the years has not gone unnoticed. We also want to thank the staff and medical staff at Grace Hospital for their professionalism and care.
The Funeral service will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025, at St. Charles Catholic Parish (320 St. Charles Street, Winnipeg) at 1:30 p.m., with interment to follow at Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue. Viewing will be held prior to service beginning at 12:00pm.
