Obituary of Marg Maitland
Born: November 23, 1933
Passed Away: March 26, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Jane Maitland, who left us on March 26, 2025, at the age of 91. Margaret was a woman of remarkable spirit, creativity, and resilience, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and determination.
Margaret was the beloved wife of the late Alan Maitland, who predeceased her in 2003. She is survived by her siblings: Jack (Margaret), Dougie (Sandy), Dilys, Linda (the late Jerry) (Brian) as well as her many nieces and nephews. Margaret was predeceased by her special niece, Janet.
She was a proud mother to four children: Cindy (the late Don) (Ron), Craig (Karen), Valerie (John), and Alan (Nicole), and a cherished grandmother to 11 grandchildren: Missy (Jeff), Katie (Chris), Hayley (Mark), Matthew (Melissa), Robert, Jonathan (Natasha), Joanna (Ben), Logan (Sarah), Kier (Melissa), Madeleine, and Zach. She was also a great-grandmother “Gigi” to 11 great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy, including her late great-grandson, Jackson.
Margaret’s life journey was one of transformation and reinvention. She was born in Toronto and then moved to Wales at age 4. At the young age of 14, she traveled back to Canada with her brother Jack, embarking on a new life across the ocean. Margaret spent a significant part of her earlier years in Montreal, where she modeled for the renowned Constance Brown. She had a vibrant social life, making lasting friendships with women like Vi McMurtry and Marion Forbes, and spending joyful hours with her tennis and bridge friends at Lampton Golf Club.
Her zest for life never waned, even as she embraced new beginnings in her later years. At the age of 88, Margaret made the bold decision to move to Niagara, where her love for learning and connecting with others led her to join the Euchre and Newcomers Club.
Margaret shared the last 20 years of her life with her loving partner, Walter, who was her constant companion and source of joy. She also had the cherished company of her two best friends in St. Catharines, Evelyn and Grete. Together, they enjoyed many fun shopping trips to Winners, HomeSense, lunches, and outings to the casino, always bringing laughter and love into each other’s lives.
A special thanks to her “other daughter” Gail McGregor, whose kindness and support to Margaret were evident throughout her life. Immense gratitude given to her cancer team at the Walker Clinic, particularly Dr. Robert Claydon, and her family doctor, Dr. Tim Bastedo, for their exceptional care.
Margaret was a woman who always sought to add her flair to the world around her, embracing challenges with enthusiasm and never shying away from new experiences. Her creative mind and determined heart will be missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Walker Cancer Clinic or Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, where Margaret received such compassionate care.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted with the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 28th, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at The Royal Canadian Legion located at 57 Lakeport Rd, St. Catharine’s, ON. We invite all to come and celebrate Margaret’s life, and to wear some glitter or glitz in her honor, as she would have loved.
