Margaret Maureen Markson Obituary
MARGARET MAUREEN MARKSON (nee JAMES) February 25, 1937 – May 24, 2025
We celebrate the loving and faithful life of Margaret Markson, who passed away at Humber River Hospital, on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at the age of 88.
Sister to John, Mary Jane, Walter and Alejandro, and to the late Muriel, Peter, Sarah and Joe; dear wife of Joseph for 54 years; loving and devoted mother of Joseph (Alicia), James (Carol), Maureen Lamb (Patrick), Anne, and Catherine McGovern (Damian); and joyful, proud and greatly loved Nana to her eight grandchildren, Matthew, Christian, James, Andrew, Amelia, Jack, Julia and Leah.
Margaret was the loving daughter of generational Irish immigrants from the small town of Almonte in the Ottawa Valley, Hilliard and Carmel James. She was born and raised in Toronto and attended St. Brigid’s Parish with her parents and seven brothers and sisters. Margaret was a proud graduate of St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto, where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1958 and attended the School of Social Work. She obtained her Ontario Teacher’s Certificate from Toronto Teachers’ College in 1973 and specialist qualifications in Primary Education, Special Education and English as a Second Language, all of which she put to good service in becoming the Catholic elementary and ESL teacher that parents would fervently hope to see standing at the front of their children’s classrooms. Margaret cherished her students as if they were her own children and she inspired the virtues of kindness and honesty in them by example. She fulfilled her vocational promise to provide a nurturing and faith-based education for hundreds of beautiful young minds and souls.
Margaret’s faith in Our Lord was absolute, unwavering and relentless, and she passed on and strengthened the eternal gifts of faith, family and love in the lives of her family and friends. On earth, her confidence in the power of prayer, especially the rosary and the intercession of Our Lady, was empirically based and she stormed heaven with petitions for grandchildren taking exams and family members and friends in need of healing and consolation. In heaven now, we know that she prays for all of us from a front row seat.
Margaret was gifted with a sharp and curious mind, an insatiable love of reading, a radiant smile, natural elegance, and a playful sense of humour. Whether she was cooking or cleaning to meet a real or imagined need, she was happiest when she was spending time with and serving her family. For Margaret, Christmas and the need to collect and display decorations lasted 365 days of the year.
We love and thank her for countless treasured memories and priceless gifts, among them: the idyllic summers of our childhood at the cottage, date squares, vacations in Walt Disney World, beach days in Sarasota, her zealous encouragement of all of our efforts, her infinite prayers of support, her courageous life of sacrificial love, her harmonization of grace and might, her laughter, and for teaching us how to pray.
Margaret lived a life that greatly added to the balance of grace in this world.
The Markson Family is incredibly grateful to the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood and the St. Bernard’s Residence Mission and to Margaret’s personal support workers Ana and Crisca for their compassionate and professional care.
Family and friends may call at Ridley Funeral Home, 3080 Lake Shore Boulevard West, Toronto, on Sunday, June 1st, 2025 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Teresa’s Roman Catholic Church, 100 Tenth Street, Etobicoke, on Monday, June 2nd, 2025 at 10 a.m.
