Margaret Joan Ragotte nee Lomonaco 1934-2024
Died peacefully at age 90 on December 23rd, 2024, amid Christmas carols and gentle snowflakes, her children at her bedside to her final day.
Margaret was lovingly cared for by her devoted family throughout her final decade with dementia, cherishing our countless visits nourished with walks, music, and affection, and spending the last six years with support at Extendicare, Port Hope. We are deeply grateful to their dedicated people for treating her with such kindness and warmth.
Born in Winnipeg to immigrant European parents, Margaret was the first in her family to graduate from university. At just 18, she began teaching high school languages, a role she embraced until marrying Wayne, her devoted husband of 61 years.
Margaret and Wayne created an idyllic family life for their three children, Stacey, Karen and Mark in Winnipeg. A loving, compassionate, dedicated mother, Margaret treasured this time of her life more than any, dedicating her time, imagination and boundless energy to raising and nurturing her children, giving them every experience and opportunity she could.
With their three adolescent children, she followed Wayne’s career to Toronto in 1971. She continued industriously and creatively interweaving her artistic talents with exciting family and social activities. Whether designing and crafting our clothes, brilliantly transforming the interiors and gardens of our many homes, singing in the church choir, volunteering at our schools, or entertaining in chic “Mad Men” style, she infused all with her elegance, compassion, diplomacy, and grace.
Always passionate about education, lifelong learning, and excellence in everything she pursued, she was an inspiring role model, enthusiastically encouraging her children and the generations to come.
When circumstances required, at 45 Margaret re-entered the workforce and re-educated herself in the medical side of life insurance as an underwriter, culminating her rewarding second career as a highly respected and admired North American Manager, and retired at 60.
Margaret and Wayne actively embraced their retirement in Brighton, Cobourg and Port Hope, east of Toronto with their beloved dogs. They were enthusiastically immersed in the lives of their children and precious grandchildren – attending every hockey game, gymnastics meet and dance recital. She enhanced all her former artistic and social passions adding stained glass, quilting, gardening clubs, and volunteering for hospice, meals on wheels and at her church. She orchestrated a major renovation of their century home and created award-winning gardens. After overcoming breast cancer and surgery at 70, she embarked on her first competitive athletic pursuit on the Survivor Thriver Dragonboat team. This time, it was our turn to feel overwhelmed with pride as we cheered her on at her races.
Margaret patiently and empathetically supported and cared for her charming, adoring and fun-loving husband, Wayne, during their life together. She fiercely advocated for him, tirelessly researching and pursuing the latest treatments for his illnesses while persistently encouraging his adherence. When Parkinson’s necessitated his move to Extendicare during his last five years, she was facing a gradual decline with dementia, and eventually joined him there, remaining by his side until his passing, six years before hers.
Loving her eternally, her children, grandchildren and family:
Stacey, husband Peder Enhorning, Tatiana and Teigen
Karen, husband Mike O’Leary, Kaylee and Tristan (Rylie and Joe)
Mark, wife Izabelle, Erik and Sabrina (Ollie), Kate and Adam, Michael and Adrianna (Lenny) and Robert
Younger brothers: Ross Lomonaco, wife Kathleen, Kally and John (Emma, Isaac), Erin and Ryan (Pace,
Chloe, Caden, Clay) and Ernie (deceased), wife Sharon, Tracey and Sam (Declan, Cael)
Warm, outgoing, and full of life, Margaret was deeply loved and admired by everyone who knew her. She was cherished for her kindness, intelligence, elegance, compassion, grace, creativity, and strength—but above all, for her boundless love for her family. Margaret’s unconditional love and infinite belief in all of us, her children, grandchildren, siblings and all their families, will forever remain in our hearts.
Celebration of Life 11:00 January 11 at St. Mark’s Church, 51 King St, Port Hope. Reception to follow.
