Margaret Brown Obituary
Our beloved friend and elder, Margaret Brown, passed away peacefully at her home in Lethbridge, April 29, 2025, at the age of 86 years.
Margaret Elizabeth Florence Brown was born in Vermillion, AB, January 18, 1939 to Llewellyn and Fern (Wilson) Brown. She had many happy memories of growing up on the farm alongside older siblings, Frances and Harvey, including of helping her father with the cows. She carried a love of animals with her throughout her life.
Tragedy struck the family with the untimely deaths of her sister and father, and illness of her mother. Unable to manage on her own, Margaret was admitted to Alberta Hospital (Oliver) at age 20, and then the Provincial Training School in Red Deer (Michener Center). Altogether, she endured 32 years of institutionalization, emerging in 1992 with her trademark perseverance, grace, and determination intact. She never lost her desire to return home, but when the time came, found that she had no home left to which to return. Instead, with the help of her trusted public guardian, she moved to Southern Alberta where she lived in a variety of settings in Lethbridge and Coaldale before finding a permanent home in L’Arche Lethbridge in 1999. She worked at the Lethbridge Rehabilitation Society before “retiring” to the DaCapo seniors’ program.
Throughout her years at L’Arche and DaCapo, Margaret inspired and delighted the many young people from around the world who came to share life in her home, and those who supported her at day program, with her deep faith in God and her wry sense of humour. She was very opinionated and freely dispensed trademark nuggets of wisdom and advice about daily life and relationships, as well as words of encouragement and comfort, to anyone she deemed in need of it. Her witty remarks, observations, and stories were legendary as was her devotion in equal parts to the Salvation Army and the Lethbridge Hurricanes. She loved nothing better than a rousing hymn played by the church brass band, or a rowdy hockey fight out on the ice!
Nevertheless, Margaret was a woman of great dignity, taking her royal names to heart. She was a lady through and through, seldom seen without her hat, jewelry and well-manicured nails. Those beautiful rings and nails adorned dainty hands, often proffered for a kiss, particularly when her greeter was a dashing gentleman!
Beyond her commitment to the Salvation Army, scripture-reading, and prayer, Margaret expressed her faith through her music. She sang, or played by ear on the piano, quite a repertoire classic hymns, including her favourite, “The Love of God.”
Margaret had an unquenchable zest for life. In her later years she rebounded from numerous health challenges, even doggedly recovering from a broken hip so she could take her annual holiday to Mexico as she had for a number of years. She loved to travel, enjoying the ocean, the attentive staff at the hotel, and the shrimp at the buffet. Margaret lived her life to the fullest right to the end, and died as she wished, in her own bed, and among the people who loved her. We will miss her enormously.
We trust Margaret is having a joyous reunion in heaven with all her family members who have gone before, in particular her beloved brother Harvey (Shirley) Brown, and dear friends and housemates Doug Anderson and Jayne Snider. She is survived by her cousins Edwin Brown and Paul Wilson, and her many L’Arche friends and housemates over the years – far too many to mention by name – to whom she was a sister and companion on the journey.
A Celebration of Margaret’s Life will be held at 10:30am on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at the SALVATION ARMY LETHBRIDGE COMMUNITY CHURCH, 1302 4 Ave S, Lethbridge, AB.
