Obituary of Lorne Thomas Winkler
It is with much sadness, but great thanksgiving for a life well lived, that the family of Lorne Winkler announces his passing on Sunday, March 9, 2025 in his 94th year.
Lorne was devoted to his wife, Elizabeth, of 73 years of marriage. A proud and loving father to David (Kim), Karen (Jon), Steven (Deceased), Christine (Randy) and Scott (Bonnie). Lovingly adored by his many Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Brother to Pat Emslie of Waterloo and June Fleiger of Lloydminster, BC (Deceased).
Lorne was born and raised in Waterloo. He spent his career at James C. Snyder Furniture Ltd. for 40+ years where he designed and sold furniture. During the later years in his career he built his retirement home in Collingwood and moved there in 1995 after retiring. He then returned to Waterloo in 2023 to be back home with his children.
Lorne, loved fishing, hunting, camping and canoeing with friends and family.
He enjoyed playing tennis and skiing and was an avid gardener who loved spending time in his greenhouse or on his riding lawnmower.
Lorne had been very much involved with Chicopee Ski Club throughout his life, and had been President of the club in both the 60’s and 70’s. He spent many days and nights strolling the hills, helping to clear the land for future expansions and was heavily involved in all aspects of the club. Skiing was such a passion to him that he introduced his children to skiing at the same time as teaching them to walk.
In Collingwood, Lorne joined the Knights of Columbus and helped start their first Chapter. He worked tirelessly on fund-raising especially for their annual charity golf tournament.
Lorne volunteered with CESO, a none-profit organization, and with them travelled to Guyana and Jamaica where he designed furniture that was later sold throughout the Caribbean.
Lorne was a people person. He loved talking with people, attending social gatherings and loved discussing current events of the day.
Thanks to all the staff at Chartwell, Terrace on the Square for making his time there memorable. He was truly in his element there.
Lorne will be missed by all who found their way to having met him.
