Lorne Francis Waechter, of Hanover, a man whose strength, kindness, and unwavering devotion touched the lives of all who knew him, passed away at South Bruce Grey Health Center on March 21, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Succumbing to Alzheimer’s disease, Lorne reunites with the heavenly father 9 days short of his 93rd birthday.
Born on March 30, 1932, in Walkerton, Ontario Lorne was the son of the late Andrew and Susan (Hehn) Waechter. He was a beacon of strength from an early age, stepping into the role of provider at just thirteen to support his mother and siblings. This early responsibility shaped him into a man of extraordinary work ethic and unwavering dedication to his family.
Lorne’s hands were his tools, and his faith was his guide. He became a carpenter, a skilled homebuilder, and a trusted contractor, crafting not just structures, but a foundation of security and love for his family. He generously shared his trade knowledge, mentoring countless young men and relatives, leaving an indelible mark on the community.
Beyond his tireless work, Lorne was a man of deep and abiding faith. His commitment to his Catholic community was evident in his service as Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus and his quiet devotion during weekly adoration at the Hanover church, well into his 80’s. For over 50 years, Lorne lifted his voice in celebration as a member of the Hanover and Walkerton church choirs and he was humbled when asked to contribute his vocal talents as a soloist at weddings.
Many will fondly recall Lorne’s cheerful calls during Sunday evening Bingo at the Knights of Columbus, a testament to his joyful spirit and passion for playing games and cards. Whether a game of solo with his siblings or a game of Aggravation with his grandchildren, you could always count grandpa in.
Left behind to honor Lorne’s memory is his beloved wife of 57 years Mary Lou (nee: Weaver) Waechter, and his three children Christine (nee: Waechter) Stiller of Jupiter, Florida, Laurie Waechter of Walkerton, and Randall (Katerina Petrovskaya) Waechter of Hanover. Lorne was also a proud grandpa to his two grandchildren Natalie Stiller and Logan Anness, who brought light and laughter into his life.
Lorne was predeceased by his brothers Alfred, Joseph, and Ralph Waechter, and his sister Wilma (Waechter) Reitzel. He leaves behind his sister, Marjorie (Waechter) Lang of Walkerton, and a host of family and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Visitation will be held at Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover, on Wednesday, March 26th, 2025, from 4-7 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Walkerton, on Thursday March 27th, 2025, at 11 am. Father Les Szczygiel officiating. Cremation will follow, with inurnment in Holy Family Cemetery, Hanover.
Lorne’s life was a testament to the power of hard work, the beauty of faith, and the enduring strength of family love. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched. May he rest in eternal peace.
