With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Leslie (Les) William Hodgson at the age of 65.
Born on November 23, 1959, in Moose Jaw, SK., Les was the son of Stella and Albert (Red) Hodgson. He was truly one of a kind-creative, kind, and caring, but with a definite stubborn streak.
Les grew up on Hopkins Cres., surrounded by a close-knit group of neighborhood kids who were always up to something-raiding gardens, playing games outside, swimming at the Nat, or skating at Palliser Heights or the Civic Center. When he wasn’t with the crew, you could find him out on his bike, exploring the prairies near the Iron Bridge, building forts, and collecting whatever treasures caught his eye. His love for nature and animals stayed with him throughout his life, which resulted in a talent and love of photography.
After graduating from Vanier Collegiate, Les worked briefly with CPR in Moose Jaw before moving to Saskatoon, where he joined Northern Telecom in the early days of fiber optics until the company closed. He loved road trips, occasionally tagging along with his best friend, Bob Olafson, on long hauls. Les also really enjoyed cooking which might come as a surprise to many folks.
Some of his favourite moments were spent sitting at a campfire or backyard fire pit, listening to friends or family playing music and telling stories. In Saskatoon, he loved his top-floor condo, where he could sit out on his balcony or rooftop, getting some fresh air, watching the birds, and enjoying the view of the trees, the river valley, and whatever weather might be coming in.
Les is predeceased by his parents, Stella (née Hook) and Albert Hodgson, and his best friend Bob Olafson. He is survived by his brother, Dale Hodgson; nephew Daina Hodgson (Kirk McCullough); niece Danielle Hodgson; great-nephew Tate and great-niece Ava; niece Niki (Gustavo) Pontes; great-nephew Ian and great-niece Ana; sister Cathy Adams; nephew Daniel Blondeau (Kaylee Galvin); great-nephews Hunter and Liam; and niece Sarah (Lowell) Burtnick; great-nephew Brooks; along with many cousins and friends.
Over the years, Les faced many health challenges, which ultimately led to his passing. Mental health challenges also took a toll on his quality of life and made it harder for him to enjoy the things he once loved. Les had just agreed to move back to Moose Jaw, closer to his siblings, sadly time just didn’t allow for that to happen. As per his wishes, Les has been cremated, and his family will be holding a celebration of life for family and close friends at a later date.
A heartfelt thank you to his friends Doug and Fern Hetterly, as well as Nick Kettle, for the friendship, kindness and support they showed for Les.
