Obituary
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Leonardo Farrauto, who departed this life peacefully and surrounded by his loving family, in his 92nd year, at Idlewyld Manor on June 6th, 2025. Leonardo was a dedicated husband to Antonia (nee Scamacca), his loving wife of 65 years, and a devoted and loving father to Salvatore, the late Stefano (1988), and Anthony Farrauto. Predeceased by parents Salvatore and Marianna Salvatrice Farrauto and Stefano and Lucia Scamacca. Loving brother to the late Calogero, the late Lorenzo (the late Maria), the late Luigi (Angela, wife of the late Giuseppe Sansotta), Concetta Mattina (the late Rafaelle), the late Giuseppe (Maria), and the late Camillo (Maria). Dear brother-in-law to the late Calogera Allegro (Paolo), Leonarda Zelmo (the late Giachino) and Vincenzo Scamacca (the late Yvonne) Lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews and friends both here and overseas.
Born in Racalmuto, Sicily, Leonardo moved to Belgium with his parents and siblings where he worked as a coal miner for 4 years starting at the age of 14. He immigrated to Canada in 1953 with only $17.00 in his pocket and a dream for building a better life. He returned to Belgium in 1960, married Antonia and returned to Hamilton, this time with his beautiful bride and a promised future ahead of them.
Leonardo was a proud lifetime retired LIUNA member of 65 years and worked primarily for Canadian Engineering and Contracting, retiring at the age of 60. In satisfying his need to keep busy, he became the part time custodian at Annunciation of Our Lord Church resulting in another 20 year career until his second retirement at the age of 82. Leonardo loved tending to his garden (he took pride in having the best garden in the neighborhood!), making wine, watching western movies and soccer, and loved to travel, particularly to Belgium, Edmonton and Mexico. He loved his daily espresso coffees “Dunie, lu facisti lu café”. His quiet and likeable demeanor made everyone he met admire him. He was short in stature, but a giant in love, friendship, wisdom and guidance. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. His long and hard work provided for the wonderful life which we enjoy today. Family meant everything to him, He was a great husband and the best father ever, definitely “one of a kind.” He was our Rock. We love you Papa.
Special thank you to family Dr. Chamika Perera, and Dr. Mark Grafham and Nurse Practitioner Leanne Maslowski of Idlewyld for your dedicated care. An immense thank you to all of the management and staff of Idlewyld Manor, particularly the staff in the Orchard View wing, who extended tremendous love, care, kindness and compassion to Papa Leo over the last 2 years. He was treated like family. We have the utmost respect for all you do every day.
Resting at FRISCOLANTI FUNERAL CHAPEL, 43 Barton St. E., (43 Barton St. E.) on Wednesday June 11, 2025 from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be offered at Annunciation of Our Lord Church (280 Limeridge Rd. W.) on Thursday June 12, 2025 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Burlington.
