LEO MARVIN SAKCHEKAPO
January 19, 1967 – January 23, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Leo Marvin Sakchekapo, age 58 years, unexpectedly in his home of North Caribou Lake First Nation on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
Leo was born on January 19, 1967 in Round Lake to Greta (née Mekenack) and Caleb Sr. Sakchekapo. He was raised in North Caribou Lake First Nation and served his community for his entire life, whether it be a janitor, Manager of OCDC, Band Councillor or Chief. He was truly proud to serve his fellow band members in any capacity and willing to help in any way needed.
Above all else, Leo’s family was his true passion. Time spent with his children and grandchildren brought him the greatest joy. He was truly a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to all. Leo will be deeply missed by all, but the memories he left us with will be in our hearts forever.
Leo is survived by his common-law wife, Judy Patayash; his children Larissa (Jordan) Mamakeesic, Métis (Toussaint) Adams and Sagatay Beardy; ex-wife Celinda Patayash; grandchildren Elijah Mamakeesic, Eliana Mamakeesic, Colton Mamakeesic.
He is also survived by his mother Greta Sakchekapo; siblings Sheila (Mike) Gabrie, Karen Sakchekapo, Caleb Jr. (Nancy) Sakchekapo and Cheryl (John) McCallum; aunties and uncles: Harry (Eva) Sakchekapo, Raymond (Beatrice) Adams, Lucy Adams, Caroline (Maio) Quequish, Isiah Kanate, Pierre Morrisseau, Francis McKoop, Cyril (Emma) Mekenack, Richard (Maria) Mekenack, Ophelia Kam, Jessie McKay, Joseph Tait, Ida (Henry) McKay, Salome “Grace” (Maio) Matawapit as well as numerous cousins and extended family.
He is predeceased by his father, Caleb Sr. Sakchekapo; Brother, Roy Sakchekapo; Nieces and nephews, Josephine Sakchekapo, Troy Sakchekapo and Eric Sakchekapo; Grand Daughter Emily Sakchekapo; Aunties and uncles: Innes Sakchekapo, Sarah (William) Quequish, Jodina and Norman Patayash,Thomas (Abigail) Adams, Sadie (Isaac) Chikane, Ina Kanate, Phyllis Morrisseau, Moses Kam, Simian McKay, Elizabeth (Johnny) Tait, Sarah Tait as well as many other relatives.
A Wake Service will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2025 from 1:00 until 3:00pm in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, with Evangelist Tamar Plummer officiating.
Leo will then be transported back home to North Caribou Lake First Nation, where Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 3, 2025 at 11:00 am, in the Weagamow Lake Evangelical Fellowship Church with Pastor TBD, officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Weagamow Lake Community Cemetery.
