Leo MacCumber Obituary
Leo Leroy MacCumber passed away at the Swan River Hospital December 23rd 2024 at the age of 88. He was born at the Swan River Hospital on September 14th, 1936 to Lewis and Kitty MacCumber. He was raised on their Renwer farm with his brother Edward .Growing up he attended Deerpath and Fisher Siding (Renwer) schools.
His love for hard work began early, working for various farms around home until he struck out on his own to work on the railroad at 15 years of age. He worked for CNR for a couple of years until he found a new calling in construction. He was with Veterans construction for roughly ten years. It was in this time that he met the other love of his life, Betty McDonald of Belmont, MB. Betty would go on to do the books for the company and Leo would operate the equipment and drive the trucks. (many years later at a funeral for an old colleague he was given recognition as being the best loader operator they ever saw. This filled him with great pride.) Leo and Betty would travel back to Renwer planting down roots with a farm of their own. Leo had two children prior in Tom and Kathy. They would also adopt two more children in Chris and Lore. Leo would raise his family on the Renwer farm much like he was raised as a kid. Leo would go on to farm for many years. The call of the Road came back and he would purchase several Semi’s over the years as trucking soon replaced farming. He was always a trucker as he trucked for years during construction and while he was farming. It was in his blood. He always loved the challenge and reward of a hard day’s work and he eventually found another passion that would employ and define him. He would begin Outfitting and taking Americans on guided hunts for Black Bear and Whitetail Deer. During this time, he began working seasonally for Siewert concrete hauling septic tanks while Outfitting in the spring and fall. He did both for almost twenty years and upon his retirement from both he once again returned to trucking, this time working for Julian Cotton. He actually worked until he was about 75, his love of hard work made it so. Leo was always a jack of all trades and there was nothing that he could not make. If he didn’t have it, he made it. From his trailers to haul behind his ATVs to the trailers to haul his ATV’s and trailers. He really could do it all. Once he retired from trucking, he was just as busy as ever woodworking in his shop making barn board frames and turntables etc. His love of farming was always present as he and Betty had maintained a market garden all through the years. It was always a source of pride for him to eat from his own garden and share it with family, friends and neighbors, especially his potatoes. Just a few years ago after many years of officially being retired Leo said that he missed all of the hard work the most. He will lovingly be remembered for all of his hard work that provided so much to the ones that he loved the most. He loved his family and he will be missed dearly but not forgotten.
He was predeceased by a sister Inez who died at birth. He was also predeceased by both parents Lewis and Kitty, his brother Edward, his oldest son Tom and grandson Brandon (Kathy). He is survived by his adopted brother Barney and adopted sister Corrine. His devoted wife Betty, grandson William (Tom), daughter Kathy, son Chris (& Regan) grandchildren Dylan, Parker, Madelyn, Rowan, daughter Lore and grandson/best friend Brandel Leeroy.
