Lena Dowhan (nee Kuz), a cherished matriarch and pillar of warmth in the lives of her family and community, peacefully passed away on March 28, 2025, at the age of 96 in Windsor, Ontario. Born on February 28, 1929, in Gimli, Manitoba, Lena’s life was a tapestry of dedication, love, and vibrant passion, woven through the years with the threads of her unwavering spirit.
Predeceased by her beloved husband Walter in 1987, Lena’s legacy is carried on through her loving family. She was a devoted mother to Walter (predeceased in 2022, survived by wife Stephanie), John (predeceased in 2017, Margie), Gary (predeceased in 2007), Ron (Bernice predeceased in 2020), and Terry (Sherrie). Lena’s joy was multiplied through her grandchildren Wendy (predeceased in 2023, Glenn), Shelley (Craig), John (Shawn), Tracey (Glenn), Ron Jr. (predeceased in 2004), Kimberly (John predeceased in 2021), Kerry (Jamie), Kelly, John Jeffery (JJ) (Julie), and Austin. Her role as a great grandmother and great great grandmother brought her immeasurable pride and happiness, and her nurturing love will forever be a golden thread in the family’s history.
Lena’s work at the Sandhill Motor Hotel alongside her husband and in-laws was marked by an unwavering commitment and a generous spirit that welcomed all. Her dedication to her work was paralleled only by her dedication to her family and the community that she held dear.
A passionate gardener, Lena found solace and joy in the midst of her blossoming plants and roses. Her garden was a reflection of her love for life, with every petal and leaf tended to with the same care and attention she gave to her loved ones. The family cottage, too, held a special place in her heart, as it was a sanctuary of cherished memories and shared laughter throughout many years.
Christmas was Lena’s season of magic. Her love for the holiday was evident in the meticulous way she decorated her home and prepared festive feasts for her family. The warmth of Lena’s Christmas spirit was infectious, turning every holiday season into a cherished memory that her family will hold dear.
Lena was the epitome of loving, generous, and passionate—a woman whose heart knew no bounds when it came to her family. Her presence was a source of comfort and strength, and her ability to give selflessly defined her as the remarkable woman she was.
Lena Dowhan will be deeply missed by her family, including her many nieces and nephews, who found in her a guiding light and a source of endless support. Her passing leaves a void that can never be filled, but her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
As we bid farewell to Lena, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a legacy of love that will continue to inspire generations. Her story is one of resilience, devotion, and an unwavering commitment to her family. Baba Lena will forever be remembered as a beacon of love and the heart of her family.

On Thursday April 3, 2025 visitation will be held at Families First 3260 Dougall Ave, South Windsor from 2-4 and 6-8 PM, On Friday April 4, 2025 visiting will resume from 10:30 until time of a funeral service at 11 AM. Cremation to follow.
