Leigh Toner
Leigh Toner, age 61 of Cole Harbour, passed away on Wednesday,
February 5, 2025 after a short but heroic battle in hospital. He was
surrounded by loved ones who reminded him just how special he was and
what a huge impact he has had on so many people.
Born in Grand Falls, New Brunswick, he was the son of Clarence Toner
(Huguette Michaud) and the late Germaine (Beaulieu) Toner. Aside from
his father, Leigh is survived by his loving wife Janet (Alexander)
Toner; daughters: Kaleigh Toner (Jamie Foster); Breanna Toner (Luke
Durham); sons: Kyle Brine; Justin Brine (Laura); Mackenzie Toner (Jess
Hennessy); brothers: Glen Toner (Allan Puss); Cletus Toner; and the
apple of his eye, granddaughter Isla Brine. Leigh also had an extended
family which included sister/brother’s-in-law, nieces, nephews,
and cousins who will all miss him dearly.
In recent years, Leigh found his true calling with Northbridge
Insurance working in Risk Services. He was able to bring his years of
transportation experience, his passion for safety, his love of travel,
and his ability to connect with people, to this role. When he
wasn’t working this country boy loved spending time with family,
a good card game with friends, and being behind the wheel of anything
that moved. Heading to a warm destination or a NASCAR track brought
him incredible joy.
He was always the first to jump in. Leigh would help anyone,
especially a family member or friend who was in need. He was also
known to stop and talk with total strangers, just in case they needed
help, too. When it came to planning, or packing, nobody did it better
than Leigh. Whether it was the trunk of the car on family vacations,
patio furniture in the shed, or life in general, he’d make
everything fit perfectly.
Leigh’s circle of friends was vast and far-stretching. Anyone
who had the chance to know or talk to him left a better person, as
long as they didn’t ask for directions. In an effort to help,
Leigh would often complicate the explanation, leaving people searching
for landmarks that were no longer there.
Growing up in Grand Falls and potato farming with the family gave
Leigh strong roots, an amazing work ethic, and the uncanny ability to
spot a New Brunswick potato. Leigh wasn’t much of a cook but
from evening dinners to large family gatherings, Leigh had two
self-appointed jobs, mashed potatoes and washing dishes. He took both
jobs very seriously.
Join us to celebrate Leigh’s life and to share stories on
Tuesday, February 11 between the hours of 5pm and 9pm at Atlantic
Funeral Home; 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. In lieu of flowers or
donations we ask that you support local and buy New Brunswick potatoes
for your next family dinner, in Leigh’s memory.
A service and reception will be held at St. Patrick’s church, as
well, at a later date in the spring once the weather is more favorable
for those who wish to attend and yet need to travel. Leigh’s
wife and family will be at this service as well. The date will be
announced at a later time.
