It is with profound sadness that we
announce the passing of Laurena Evelyn Louise
« Rean » Ashe, 92, on Monday, July 7, 2025 at
her home in Springhill. Born in Rodney, Laurena was a
daughter of the late Arthur and Eva (Izzard) Gabriel and the widow of
the late Irvin Winthrop Ashe.
Laurena was a brave and loving woman,
she was strong and feisty lady who did not mince words when advice was
asked of her. She would tell you what she thought and did
not hold back. She was a loving mother and grandmother to
her own and everyone who met her. Her greatest love was her family,
she watched her own mother battle cancer as well as her mother in law
(whom she looked after until the end) and her step-daughter who called
on her on a regular basis to chat.
Nan was always sharing stories of her
childhood and days growing up. She had open arms for all who
needed someone in whom they could confide.
She had a passion for sewing,
step-dancing at house parties, and later in life when cooking meals
for her children and grandchildren.
Everybody who entered Nan’s house was
made sure they didn’t go thirsty or hungry, she had a big heart and
was always willing to share so the next person didn’t go
without.
She fought a courageous battle before
returning back to God and Jesus. She passed at home with
loved ones by her and her special little boy (EJ/Ewan) whom she cared
for deeply.
There are no words to describe the loss
of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great great
grandmother, she will forever be missed and always
loved.
Laurena will be dearly missed by her
children, Corrine Lockhart, Port Howe, Raymond (Monique Boudreau)
Ashe, Kentville, Blaine Ashe, Pictou Landing, Rickey (Gail) Ashe,
Springhill, Shelley Ashe, Springhill, Wendy (Tim Gallagher) Ashe,
Springhill, and Dale (Linda) Ashe, Springhill; her raised
granddaughter, Raven (nee Ashe) Mullings, Springhill and Dorothy
(Vaughn) Atkinson, Truemanville, (nee Ashe); 27 grandchildren, many
great and several great great grandchildren; as well as two sisters,
Arvilla Anderson, Toronto and Hilda Pye, St. Margarets Bay, NS. and
numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents she is predeceased
by her husband, Irvin; her step-daughters, Roslyn (late Ronnie) Ernst
and Heather (late Ron) Gardener; her son-in-law, Eric Lockhart and her
grandson Jamal Ashe, as well as her siblings, Ensley, Roland, James,
Doug, Cliff, Russell, Sidney, Rachel, Louise and Ida.
A thank you to Carla Greene for her
support and wonderful care of Nan through the years, the Pugwash and
Amherst hospitals, and the staff of VON.
Arrangements are under the care and
supervision of A.H. Brown Funeral Home, 5
McFarlane Street, Springhill, NS (902-597-2361). A time of
visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, July 11 from
2-4 and 6-8 pm. Funeral service held Saturday, July 12, 2025
at 3:00 pm from the Funeral Home followed by burial in Hillside
Cemetery, Springhill.
Donations in Rean’s memory may be made
to the IWK or a charity of the Donor’s Choice.
