In Celebration of
Kira Kostrzewa
May 6, 1974 –
February 4, 2025
It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Kira Kostrzewa at the age of 50 after a valiant battle with the side effects of cancer treatment.
Kira passed away at the Toronto General Hospital on Tuesday, February 4th with her loving family and close friends by her side. Kira was a special person in so many ways. Her love and heart were enormous, and she always had such joy, twinkle in her eyes, and radiant smiles, even as she battled such incredible health issues. Kira had been to the brinks many, many times and fought back so courageously. She had so much strength not reflected by her physical body, she was comforted and guided by her never wavering faith.
Kira attended Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School and Michael Power-St. Joseph High School. She was an active member of the Silver Blades Skating Club and later entered the Academic Program for Gifted Athletes in competitive figure skating at Earl Haig Secondary School.
Kira completed a Bachelor of Arts, and a Bachelor of Administrative Studies (Honors) at York University. She went on to pursue a graduate degree and was a Master’s candidate in Human Resources Management when her studies were halted in 2006 with the onset of her illness. She was employed for several years with Minto Property Management, High Park, as Office Manager/Human Resources.
Kira surrounded herself with the things that brought her joy – purses, shoes, watches, perfume. Dressing up for a doctor’s appointment was the highlight of her day. She collected books, was an avid reader, and loved the smell of paper in print books. Her cats were always in her arms. She received a devastating blow 4 years ago when she lost her voice and communication, ever so important, became a real challenge for her. Kira and her baby nephew Luke, two people without words, developed their own special way of communicating. It was such a joy to witness.
Family and friends were vitally important to Kira. She strove to strengthen and develop family traditions and maintain connection with her friends. This made all our lives richer with her impact.
Kira leaves behind her mother Linda Kostrzewa, her father Richard Kostrzewa, her beloved brother Stefan Kostrzewa, her deeply loved sister-in-law Palma Mongelli-Kostrzewa, and her adored nephew Luke Kostrzewa who brought so much joy in her life.
We would like to extend a special thank you to UHN Princess Margaret, in particular Dr. Jolie Ringash and Dr. Dale Brown, as well as her family doctor Dr. Linda Weber, Unity Health – St. Jospeh’s Toronto.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to, may make a donation to the Head and Neck Site Group Fund, Princess Margaret Hospital.
Kira’s passing is a profound loss, but her spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew her. As we mourn her departure, we also celebrate a life that was rich in love, purpose, and impact. Rest in peace, Kira. Your legacy will continue to inspire and guide us.
