It is with devastation and grief that we announce the December 29, 2024 passing of Kevin Muise, after a life long struggle with depression and recent years with long Covid.
Kevin was born in Yarmouth Nova Scotia to parents Barbara (Morris) Muise and Lester Muise on November 6, 1967. He was raised in a loving, extended family near the coast; the ocean was in his blood. Starting as a young child, he developed an interest in all things political with a strong sense of social justice. One of his first jobs was giving tours at the Tusket Courthouse and he excelled at it. He seemed to have a unique kinship with the elders of his community, including his grandparents and great grandparents.
Kevin left for Ottawa at age 18 after being successfully chosen to be a Page in Parliament and developed lasting connections both socially and vocationally. He studied political science and social work, and used his passion and education to better the world for himself and others. His work at the Oasis Program to support persons with addictions was his most fulfilling and brought out the very best in him. He was a founding member of the Gay Men’s Wellness Initiative (“Max Ottawa”). In the later part of his career, he continued to make a positive social impact as a Policy Analyst.
In his spare time, Kevin diligently maintained his physical fitness by working out, walking, skating along Rideau Canal, and logging countless miles on his bicycle. He had coffee at Bridgehead with many friends over the years, but his friend Charles was an ever-present companion since arriving in Ottawa, supporting each other through life’s ups and downs. The time he spent with his partner Kyle was simply precious to him. His bond with his dogs over the years (Scruffy, Winnie, Harry, and Matty) was a mark of his kind character. He visited Nova Scotia twice a year to spend quality and engaging time with his immediate and extended family and friends and to enjoy his mother’s east coast cooking. These visits always included some time at Cape Forchu (which he described as his “mental and emotional rock”) and/or a nearby beach.
Kevin will be remembered for his politically incorrect sense of humour, generosity, intelligence, his love for basking in a hot sun, and his empathy for the challenges of others, offering an ear and solid suggestions based on experience and being present with others. As one of his friends put it, “he walked the talk in a feisty kind of way.”
Kevin is predeceased by several close friends, as well as his grandparents, and his dear friend Flo. Left to remember him with hurting hearts, but also with the joy of having known him, are his parents, Lester and Barbara, his siblings Jennifer (Peter) and Andrew, his partner, Kyle Passley, his niece, Macayla, his best friend Charles, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. We will always miss him and we are all better for having known him.
A celebration of Kevin’s cherished life will be held later this year and will be announced. Donations in Kevin’s memory can be made to Aidaen’s Place in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia or the Oasis Program in Ottawa, Ontario.
