Kenneth Collins Obituary
Kenneth Collins January 8, 1933 – January 26, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kenneth Stewart Collins who peacefully left us on January 26, 2025 at the Au Chateau residence in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario.
Born in Témiscaming, QC January 8, 1933, Ken was the beloved son of the late Eldon Collins and Agnes Schottenbauer. Ken was a devoted husband of 68 years to Lucille (Gaudette), a cherished father to his five children Greg (Maggie Bérubé), Dan (Melanie Molloy), Paul (Shelly Stack), Pat (Bev Hope), and Nancy (Mario Payeur); grandfather to Olivier, Alexis, Rosalie, Carly, Sydney, Cara, Cody, Spencer, Logan, Emily and Jacob; great-grandfather to Pézie, Edelyn and Tucker; and a special bond with Chris and Andrew Ginn.
His love and dedication to his family was unparalleled and he leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness.
Ken was an accomplished hockey player having played 4 years of Junior hockey with the Barrie Flyers 1948-1952. He is also a member of the Barrie sports hall of fame. At the end of his junior career, Ken accepted an invitation to Detroit Red Wings training camp and had the opportunity to see his idol, Gordie Howe.
Ken eventually returned to his hometown of Témiscaming, QC to work at the CIP paper mill as an electrician. He continued his hockey career playing for the Témiscaming Royals from 1952 to 1962, winning many hockey championships. Although Ken retired he never gave up on hockey, playing well into his 70s with the local old-timers in Walden and Lively, scoring his last goal at age 78! Ken was also town councilor and deputy mayor of Temiscaming during the 1960’s.
In 1968, Ken moved his family to Shawville, QC to begin a new career as an electrical teacher. Ken was involved in coaching hockey at high school and minor hockey level. One of his co-coaches was Bryan Murray who went on to coach in the NHL. After seven years in Shawville, Ken moved this family to Sudbury to return to his roots in the north. Ken taught at Lo-Ellen Park high school and for many years was the junior high school hockey coach.
Ken was an author and published a book titled “THE RING STARTS HERE: An Illustrated History of Ringette”.
Ken enjoyed his cottage on Gordon Lake outside of Témiscaming which brought his family together each summer. Ken enjoyed nature and shared this passion with his grandchildren. He always enjoyed a round of golf at the Témiscaming Golf Club where he and Lucille were lifelong members.
Rest in peace Ken. Your spirit will forever be in our hearts.
A celebration of life will be held this spring at Témiscaming ,QC to honor his memory. The Collins family would like to thank the staff at Au Chateau for their amazing care given to both Ken and Lucille. Donations to the Témiscaming Legion and the Alzheimer’s society are appreciated.
