Kenneth Darrell Sweet
1944-2025
Kenneth Darrell Sweet, 80, passed away Sunday, January 19,
2025, at home on the farm in Billtown, NS after a long battle with
Parkinson’s and Dementia. He will be sadly missed by his
wife of 57 years, Joann (Marchant) Sweet, his three sons Darrell
(Carla), Kentville; Ian (Julie), Billtown; and Michael (Cathy),
Billtown; as well as grandchildren Myles, Malcolm, Ava, Aliya, and
Aidan. He will also be missed by sisters Mary Forsythe and Barb Sweet
(Debbie Morris), and sisters in law Jean (Sandy) Logan and Susan (the
late Stephen Barker) Marchant, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Gordon and Etta (Taylor) Sweet, and
his sister Ruth (Ron) Vass.
Kenneth was born in Kentville, NS on February 4th, 1944, and
started his working career at age 14, working on the Sweet family farm
and with Keddy Brothers on Lakewood Road where he packed apples and
drove as a Striker to Atlantic Wholesalers in New Glasgow and
Stellarton. He helped his father Gordon grow the family farm from two
jersey calves and a small orchard in the 1950s to 30 milking cows when
Ian and Mike joined the farm in 1996. Over the years, the farm
prospered because of hard work and good judgement, and nothing gave
Kenneth more pleasure and a sense of pride than when his sons went off
to college; one to St. FX and two to Agricultural College. Kenneth was
very happy to watch Ian and Mike eventually take over the operations
at K&G Sweet Farm.
Kenneth was always content with family and friends around; he
was in his happy place during those times of talking and telling
stories. Helping his neighbors was very important to him. He also
enjoyed road trips, exploring Nova Scotia and other provinces. He
loved to see the countryside, what crops were planted, and what
machinery was working in the fields. When on trips to other countries,
he always most looked forward to seeing the land, crops and farming
equipment. Kenneth had a good sense of direction and remembered any
road he had been on before. When Joann would become worried about
being lost, he would say « there are still telephone lines, we are
not lost yet ». Even after his health would not allow him to drive
any longer, he still enjoyed being the passenger and telling Joann
which way to go.
During his retirement years, Kenneth served as a Director at
the Northville Farm Heritage Centre and enjoyed helping with the
antique tractor pulls and other farming events; he would often take
his John Deere tractor or some jersey calves to the Heritage Centre
activities. He was also a member of the Billtown Baptist Church and
enjoyed Sunday morning catch-up chats with neighbors after the
service. Kenneth could often be found with his dog Sparkles, checking
on what was happening around the farm and offering a hand or running
errands so his sons could keep on working.
The family wish to thank those who helped with
Kenneth’s needs during the last months of care. Thank you to
Susan Goodman who came every week and was a great comfort to Kenneth
and Joann, and to Gail Hatt for her words of wisdom and faithful
Tuesday morning stays with Kenneth. Thank you to all the friends and
family who came to call and listened to stories of Kenneth’s
progress, and a huge thank you to the Palliative Care team and VON
nurses who supplied help, advice and comfort in a time of need.
Lastly, thank you to Michael, Ian and Darrell who came to help
whenever called.
Cremation has taken place, and a funeral service will be held
at Billtown Baptist Church on Friday, February 7, 2025, at 1:30pm with
Pastor Angela Pound officiating; reception to follow. A family
committal will be held at Lakeview Cemetery at a later
date.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in memory
to VON Canada or the Northville Farm Heritage Centre. Arrangements
have been entrusted to White Family Funeral Home and Cremation
Services, Kentville. Online condolences and inquiries may be directed
