Ken Steven Obituary
We are saddened to announce the passing of D.K. (Ken) Steven on Sunday, February 9th, 2025 at the age of 92 years, six days short of his 93rd birthday.
Ken was the eldest child of Orvis and Jean Steven of Chrysler, ON. Dad grew up with two brothers and a sister. He was raised on a dairy farm and his dad also had bees and tapped trees to make maple syrup.
As a young man of seventeen, Ken and a couple of buddies came west to find work Dad had a connection in Grandview through the Wilsons (John and Bob). Dad found work at Parrott’s and met Joan Simms. Ken and Joan were married August 19, 1955. Dad bought land and farmed for years north of town — supper in the field was a picnic for us kids – not sure Mom ever thought of it as a “picnic”. She went to great lengths to deliver a hot meal while Dad made her wait while he drove us around the field to see the bears in the crop!
Dad owned and operated heavy equipment which took him to jobs all around MB. Dad’s last passion was building outdoor wood burning stoves — over 300 stoves sold to BC, AB, SK, MB and ON.
Ken and Joan raised a family of six. Dad’s eyesight failed him and he was declared legally blind. Dad managed very well until he had a fall in June 2023. He was in hospital until November 2023 when he became a resident of the Grandview PCH. Dad’s sense of humour was spot on and he enjoyed happy hour daily. He got a kick out of teasing the staff and enjoyed their teasing in return.
Dad is survived by his children; Bonnie (Connor) McDonald, Kelly (Linda) Steven, Pat (Brenda) Steven, Donna (Eugene) Kachan, Terry-Lynn Steven (Joe) and Lori Evans. There are nineteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Lloyd and Doris Steven of Chrysler, ON, sisters-in-law; Evelyn Gordon, Pat and Ron Menzies of Winnipeg, MB. There are numerous nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his wife, Joan, his son Bob, son-in-law Randy Evans and infant daughter, Barbara, as well as his sister and brother-in-law, Ken and Rietta Hillis, in-laws Bob Gordon, Doug and Doris Brasch along with Jim Simms.
A Funeral Service will be held for Donald on Thursday, February 13, 2025 at 2:00 pm from the Grandview United Church in Grandview with Rev. Luckson Mariba officiating.
Interment will follow in the Grandview Memorial Gardens & District Cemetery.
