With great love and sadness, we wish to let people know of the passing of Kathleen (Kay) Beckett, née Scott on July 10, 2025.
Kathleen was born on September 18, 1940, in Dumbarton (Clyde Side) Scotland. Although she was very shy at the time, Kathleen trained to be a teacher in Glasgow, graduating in 1961. After two years of teaching in Almondbank, Perthshire, she immigrated to Montreal, Canada. A year later she headed north to teach in Iqaluit. All sorts of adventures awaited her there, including falling in love with a handsome fellow teacher. She and Stanley quickly became a couple and married in 1965.
They spent a year traveling around the world and then landed in Fredericton for a year while Kathleen taught and Stanley studied. Then the north beckoned again and they were off to Ariviat for four years. During the Ariviat years they welcomed first Rowena and then Gordon. As a family they moved to the Yukon, back to New Brunswick and finally back to the Yukon for good in 1982.
Losing Gordon to leukemia in 1987 was a very difficult time for the whole family. Kathleen found that teaching at Jack Hulland Elementary helped her through that time. She taught there from 1987 until 2000 and felt fortunate to work with such exceptional staff and children.
Rowena married Mark Klubi in 1990 and gave Kathleen two wonderful grandchildren, Deanna and Alexander, of whom she was extremely proud.
After retirement in 2000, Kathleen and Stanley were able to take more time to enjoy the property that they had bought and developed in the Cloud Forest of Costa Rica. They explored South America while there, especially enjoying the Galapagos Islands and Machu Picchu, as well as taking several cruises in the surrounding oceans, highlights included visits to Easter Island, the Falklands and the Antarctic.
Kathleen’s love of travel continued even after her diagnosis and she often dreamed of further adventures. This time was special in other ways connecting with family and friends.
Kathleen wanted to extend thanks to all the staff at Wind River Hospice who are so caring and helpful; to the doctors who administer the MAID Program – such a wonderful opportunity that can be so joyful and of which she took full advantage. She expressed thankfulness for her husband Stanley who took such good care of her throughout her illness and to her daughter Rowena and grandchildren Deanna and Alexander.
Predeceased by: son Gordon Beckett of Whitehorse in 1987; parents Alexander and Grace Scott of Inverness, Scotland, 1999; brother, James (Jim) Scott of Inverness in 2005; brother John (Jack) Scott of NSW, Australia 2023.
A Celebration of Life for Kay, followed by a time of visiting and sharing stories and memories, will be held on Friday, August 8, 2025 at 2:00 pm at Heritage North Funeral Home, 1101 Centennial Street, Whitehorse, Yukon.
In lieu of flowers, Kay asked that donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity, organization or volunteer position of your choice.
