It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Karel Peter John de Jong at the age of 81. He died in his home on Thursday February 27, 2025, with his wife lovingly by his side.
Karel was born in Amsterdam Holland on October 17, 1943. He grew up in Amsterdam during the years after the war and after his basic education he pursued education in the field of engineering. He was than drafted into the air force and served 2 years in airplane mechanics. It was here that he met his lifelong friend Gerrit de Vries. They would later travel to Canada together.
With the air force now behind them and the quest for adventure it was a newspaper advertisement that caught their attention offering them a loan to pay their passage to Canada. Being the Dutchmen that they were, young and free, but having little money in their pockets they seized the opportunity and Karel told his parents they would only stay 2 years.
They got their papers together and took a boat to Montreal, Quebec Canada where they then caught a train across Canada and arrived in Vancouver in May of 1966.
Karel got a job as a junior draftsman at H. A Simons where he worked for many long years. He attended Bethel CRC initially but quickly transferred to Richmond CRC for a younger congregation which suited these two young Dutchmen looking to connect and have a good time. Karel quickly lucked in and found his bride. He married in June of 1968. But now his time was up in Canada and his parents wanted him home. So off he went with his bride on the return trip to Holland. They stayed 6 months with family there, but Canada was beckoning their return. They eventually settled in Richmond, BC, Canada where they built a home and had their three children.
In Richmond they attended Burnaby Christian Reformed church and whilst their children were approaching the middle years they felt called into a ministry of teaching and ministering in the Holy Spirit. This continued for some years and brought Karel much joy as he was living out his passion.
The marriage dissolved in 1995. and Karel followed his career to Indonesia where he found more adventure and a new bride. He married Ayu on November 3, in the year 2000. They hoped to build their lives together in Canada and so began the process of immigration and the transition of leaving family abroad.
They settled in Fort McMurray, Canada living many good years together surrounded by a large community of friends that became family. They attended NorthLife Fellowship Baptist Church and were very involved in Church Life.
Karel and Ayu continued to travel much with trips to Holland, Guatemala, Mexico, Indonesia and of course British Columbia Canada. With dreams of more travel in his future, it was known to all that Karel had a passion for all the peoples of God’s great earth and a heart to share the truth of the gospel.
This year would have marked his 25th anniversary with his beloved wife Ayu but God decided instead to welcome him home.
Karel is pre-deceased by his parents, Marinus and Aaltje de Jong; brother, John; and sister, Maria (Wim).
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Ayu; son, Rien de Jong (Janice); daughters, Kristie de Jong and Tamara Martens (Steven); step-daughters, Indah (Eka) and Ratih (Dwiono); step-sons, Rusnandi (Netty) and Guntar (Imaniar); grandchildren, Jeffrey, Melissa, Jamie, Cory, Mariah, Perri, Abby, Joel, Hannah, Kiryn, Liam, Adelin, Zach, Damia, Nafisa, Bayazid Fadland, Safa, Arjuna, Athallah, Abidzar, Alp Arslan, Muhammad and Aruna; great-granddaughter; Sofia; brother, Fred de Jong (Barbara); nephews, Trevor de Jong (Marnee) and Erik de Jong (Jordan); nieces, Lindsay Kooger (Kyle), Adinda DeWit, and Marylin Houwing (Alex); great nephews and nieces, Oliver, Isla, Esme, Toby, Avery, Luka, Joelle, Elias, Naira, and Jaron; sister-in-law, Gerda de Jong, as well as numerous friends and extended family members.
