June COOK Obituary
COOK – June Frances (nee Medd)
Born November 30, 1931
Died January 12, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of June’s passing at home on January 12, 2025 in Nanaimo, BC. June is survived by her much-loved grandchildren Derek and Georgia and her adored great grandchild Tyson along with June’s sister Diane, her sister-in-law Jean and many nieces and nephews and their extended families. She was a much-loved Aunt to them all. June was predeceased by her children Derek Robert and Colleen as well as her parents Clarence and Margaret, her sister Edna and brother-in-law Reg Ardron, her brother Bruce and sister-in-law Daphne, her brother Les, her brother Jack and sisters-in-law Janet and Betty, her sister Alyce and brother-in-law Ernie Ellis, and her brother-in-law Bryan Arthur.
When she was young, June had an adventurous spirit, a wonderfully, mischievous smile and a great desire to see well past the boundaries of the family farm where she was born in Rounthwaite, MB. She was the youngest of six for nine years until baby sister Diane showed up and messed that up. However, for Diane June was her hero. By then, June was succeeding in school but also loved following her big brother Jack around which led to her involvement with ball. As a teen, she played softball with Curly McKay’s Softball Team (1948-1952) which was inducted into the MB Softball Hall of Fame. She was a back catcher and excellent at it due to her great instincts and athleticism in spite of being left-handed. Her great nephew Kurt points out, ‘the throw from home plate to third is almost impossible for a left-handed catcher particularly with a right handed batter in the box’, only emphasizing June’s prowess.
June finished school and left the farm for AB to become a flight attendant (stewardess) with Canadian Pacific Airlines. In her sharp suit and hat, she worked many a Northern flight routes which often got snowed in overnight and this led to her learning how to play poker with the flight crew to whittle away the time. Her niece Maragaret years later said Aunt June was unbeatable at poker. June married in 1955 and settled in Edmonton. She had two children, Derek and Colleen and the family eventually settled in Nanaimo, BC where she and her husband began a lumber and housewares store, Captain Cook’s Lumber Supply. June prided herself on helping people with re-modeling and decorating jobs and was a good salesperson because of her eye for detail and keeping up with the styles of the day. Sister Diane and her family moved to BC and June loved to host them when they would visit.
But June’s life was not without pain and struggle. She lost her son, Derek in a house fire in 1975. The family tried to move forward through the years but eventually June divorced and she, her daughter Colleen and grandson Derek moved back to Winnipeg, MB where granddaughter Georgia was born. June was a devoted grandmother and took on the care of Derek and Georgia for the remainder of her life. June shared some lovely times in Manitoba with her siblings Bruce, Alyce, Edna & Les and their families and managed a little time in ON with brother Jack and his second wife Betty. In Winnipeg, June was close with niece Margaret with whom she had many outings and visits through the years and nephew Jack and his family. Jack always said Aunt June’s tomato aspic was ‘the best’.
June’s love of sport or game continued through her life. She was an avid curler in Souris, MB. She loved golfing with her brother Les and even got her grandson Derek out when he was five. Less active ‘sport’ like backgammon, which she learned to play on a beach in Tahiti and bridge which she enjoyed with her brother Jack among others kept her sharp. She was a dedicated hockey fan and when the Winnipeg Jets came back, she and grandson Derek rarely missed watching a game on TV. Beyond sport, music and gardening were loves of June. She watched musicals with Georgia and listened to Sinatra and the crooners and she had lovely greenspaces which included hydrangeas and pansies at any home she lived in and she also kept beautiful house plants.
In 2017, when the winters became too much, June and Derek moved back to Nanaimo and Georgia and her son Tyson soon followed. There June was able to see more of sister Diane and her family through the later years.
June was the ‘glue’ in her family. She communicated the most with all the siblings and shared the stories to those who did not reach out as much. She held them and their stories together. After losing sister Edna, brother Bruce, and brother Les there was a stretch of a few years of fairly good health for the siblings but in 2022 within a matter of months brother Jack and sister Alyce followed by her daughter Colleen all passed and some of June’s light began to fade. A battle with cancer and then COPD and heart issues finally took its toll. June’s legacy is her love of learning no matter what age, her great style to the end, her devotion to family, her truly caring heart and that wonderful smile.
