In loving memory of Juliana Slavec 1926-2025
It is with profound sadness, heavy hearts and immense love that we announce the passing of Juliana Slavec on March 15, 2025 in the 99th year of her life. She left this world on her own terms in her sleep and in peace, surrounded by family, love and devotion.
Born in Selce Slovenija in 1926 to Jakob and Ivana Penko in the Italian region of Slovenija after the First World War. She grew up as the seventh of eight children. She lost a brother in the Second World War and her father in a train accident. Life in Italy was challenging but fair and when the communists took over the region after the Second World War and citizens lost many of their rights under Yugoslavian rule, she tried to escape back to Italy with her fiancé at the time. Their attempt failed, he was killed and she was imprisoned as a political prisoner for four years.
After her release, she married and had a son. Yearning for a better life for her family, she fled across the border back to Italy where, after two years in refugee camps in Udine and Salerno, the family made their way to Canada. Settling in Thunder Bay and later Toronto, Juliana’s love for her Canadian citizenship was unparalleled after experiencing the hardships of authoritarian rule. With strong family ties to her old country and the only family member to have moved overseas, she is, to this day, an inspiration to her relatives back home.
Her greatest joy was working to make life easier for her family. Through strength, determination and an unwavering spirit, she built a beautiful life and loving family that was always at the centre of her heart. Her kindness, wisdom and generosity touched the lives of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.
A devoted mother, she instilled in her children the values of love, compassion and resilience. As a friend, she was a source of warmth and steadfast support, always ready with a smile, kind words and a helping hand. Her legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and all of those who were lucky enough to call her family. She leaves behind a lasting imprint on the hearts of those who knew her. Though she is no longer with us, her love, laughter and life lessons will continue to guide us.
Along with her husband of 53 years, Jože Slavec, who preceded her to heaven, she will be greatly missed by her family. She was cherished by her dear children, Jakob (Teresa), Joyce (Bruno Marini) and Maryann (David Jack). Proud grandmother of Janine (Rob Stead), Joseph (Brittany Twiss), Alaina, David, Andrew, Daniel and Juliana. Great-grandmother to Vivian, James and Henry.
Visitation will be held at Bernardo Funeral Home (2960 Dufferin Street, south of Lawrence Avenue) on March 19th between 2-4pm and 6-8pm.
Funeral Mass on Thursday March 20th at 10am at Our Lady of Miraculous Medal 739 Browns Line Etobicoke Ontario M8W 3V7.
