Julia’s Obituary
Llewellyn (Richardson), Julia Marie ~ Age 84, of Dartmouth, formerly Lakeville, Kings County, NS, passed away on Wednesday, January 29th, 2025. Born in Inglisville, Annapolis County, on April 22nd, 1940, she was the eldest daughter of the late Ernest and Evelyn (Whitman) Richardson.
Julia was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend, and spent much of her life giving to her community. Julia was a teacher and began her career in (Frobisher Bay) Iqaluit, a transformative experience. She taught elementary school for over a decade in several communities in the Annapolis Valley before dedicating herself to working at home, caring for her family. She returned to education as a library technician at Gaspereau Valley Elementary and West Kings District High School until her retirement. Throughout her life, Julia was a passionate volunteer, teaching Sunday school at the Wesley-Knox United Church, Woodville and taking girls on adventures as a Brownie, Guide, and Pathfinder leader. She wrote the Lakeville column for the Kentville Advertiser and later an independent Lakeville newsletter, supporting her interest in fostering a well-connected community.
Julia was an active member of the Trinity UCW of Woodville and Waterville, Lakeville Women’s Institute, Order of the Eastern Star, Trefoil Guild, Tapestry Group, and WISH group. Through all these organizations, Julia forged treasured friendships that gave her much comfort after the loss of her beloved husband, Earl, to cancer in February 2000.
Julia had an impeccable memory and could be counted on to keep dates and details straight. She loved gardening, cross-country skiing, exploring genealogy, and traveling. In 2016, Julia suffered a severe stroke. Being confined to a wheelchair since that time, Julia required extended care and eventually found her new home at Glasgow Hall in Dartmouth. Her interest in people remained, and her new hobbies became letter writing, collecting cards, decorating, clipping articles, joining residence council, and crafting. Julia adored her four grandsons and would light up in their presence. She was beloved and will be dearly missed.
Julia (AKA: Julie, Judy) was predeceased by her husband, Earl; sisters, Elva Sawula and Louise Wagner; brothers, Stanley and Freeman; sisters-in-law, Phoebe Burbidge, Sadie Barry, Sheila Llewellyn, Bea Llewellyn and Judy Richardson; and brothers-in-law, Aubrey Burbidge, Norman Llewellyn, Melbourne Llewellyn, Herbie Barry, and Armond Llewellyn.
She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Sara Lee and Michael Whitman, Eastern Passage, NS; Crystal and Jeff Woodworth Invermere, BC; four grandsons, Josh Whitman, Connor Woodworth, Kyle Whitman and Devin Woodworth; sisters Juanita Richardson, Ardis Richardson, Inglisville, NS, and Beatrice (Jim) Nemeth, Lethbridge, AB; brother, Laurie Richardson, Mount Hanley, NS; and in-laws, Rita Llewellyn, New Minas, NS, Carol and Mabel Llewellyn, South Berwick, NS, Hallet and Karen Llewellyn, Westville, NS, Gary Wagner, Beaverbank, NS, and Caroll Richardson, Hildon, NS; she also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, and close relation, Wanda Campbell Halifax, NS and her children, Rebecca and Toby .
Special thanks to the staff of Glasgow Hall for their compassionate care during Julia’s final years.
A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 2, in Waterville & District Volunteer Fire Hall, 1415 County Home Rd., Cambridge, with a reception to follow. Interment will be in the Berwick Cemetery. Donations in Julia’s memory may be made to the Lakeville Women’s Institute or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
