Obituary of Joy Sarojanee Deonarine-Clarke
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the peaceful passing of Joy
Sarojanee Deonarine-Clarke early on Mother’s Day on May 11, 2025, at the age of 72.
Joy resided in Markham, Ontario for over 40 years, but her heart always held a special
place for her birthplace in Princes Town, Trinidad and Tobago.
For over 45 wonderful years, Joy was the darling wife of Michael Clarke. Together, they
built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Joy was the cherished
mother to Kathryn (Richard), Michelle (Darien),and Allison, and her joy multiplied with
the arrival of her grandchildren, Penelope, Ethan, and Logan Thomas. She embraced
her role as « Grandma » with boundless affection, creating precious memories that will
forever be treasured.
Joy was a loving sister to Lenore Deonarine and will be fondly remembered by her. She
is now reunited with her beloved parents, Claudius and Pearl, and her dear sister,
Gemma, who predeceased her.
Joy lived a vibrant and engaged life, guided by her generous spirit and deep love for her
community. Her faith deeply shaped her life, and she was a dedicated and longtime
member of Grace Church Markham. For many years, she poured her energy into
causes close to her heart, serving on the fundraising committee for the annual
Evergreen Hospice Gala and offering her time and warmth at countless Grace Church
events. Joy had a passion for gardening, flower arranging and found immense pleasure
and tranquility tending to her plants. For over 20 years, Joy was an active and
committed member of the Markham Garden and Horticultural Society. She spent many
of those years on the Executive team as treasurer, where she took on the role of
managing finances with thoughtfulness and dedication.
Beyond her home and community, Joy embraced the joys of travel. She loved exploring
new places, especially the many memorable cruises she shared with her family and her
frequent visits to see loved ones in the Caribbean. She also had a soft spot for road
trips—whether it was a quick day drive or a weekend escape, Joy loved hitting the road
and seeing where it would take her.To stay active and healthy, Joy enjoyed going for
walks, attending Zumba classes, and spending time in her backyard—whether she was
swimming, puttering around the garden, or simply relaxing in her lounge, catching up on
the phone. She was known for always embracing life with enthusiasm.
Joy’s life was a testament to the warmth, kindness, and zest for life she shared with
everyone she met. Her gentle spirit and caring nature touched the lives of many, and
she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Our family is deeply grateful to Joy’s care team, family, friends, and neighbours whose
kindness and support brought comfort to Joy and her loved ones during her illness.
Donations can be made to Grace Church Markham, Evergreen Hospice or The Odette
Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Hospital in Joy’s memory, allowing her legacy of
compassion and faith to continue.
Though our hearts are heavy with her loss, we take comfort in the beautiful memories
Joy leaves behind.
A celebration of life will be held at Grace Church Markham on Friday, May 30th at 2 pm,
with a reception to follow. A link to the live-stream will be made available prior to the
service on this webpage.
Visitation will be held at Dixon-Garland Funeral Home on Thursday, May 29th from 2-4
pm and 7-9 pm.
